Sega Commercial Saturday: The Saturn is launched into orbit
[Editor’s note: Every Saturday, we’ll be taking a trip down memory lane and looking back at some of Sega’s greatest commercials in Sega Commercial Saturday. If you want to see a particular commercial featured, e-mail us suggestions to seganerds [at] gmail.com.]
There’s so much stuff going on in this group of launch commercials for the Saturn that I honestly don’t know where to begin. Back then, Sega was promoting launch and first generation games like Panzer Dragoon, Virtua Fighter, Clockwork Knight, and World Series Baseball, to name a few. But in between video footage of those games, these commercials featured hot bald chicks spouting nonsense, a doomsday Zordon clone, a biker in a tutu, Klu Klux Klan members and the Theater of the Eye … basically, the commercials encapsulate everything that made Sega so badass and quirky back then.
It’s kind of sad in a way to see how different Sega, and other game companies, have changed since these days. It seems they take themselves too seriously now and don’t have fun with their commercials like it appears they did a few generations ago.
Sure, these commercials are crazy insane, but they’re also funny, informing (in their own little way) and they get the point across that the Saturn was the most kick ass game console money could buy.

BY stuffing all the commercials in one clip you managed to make them annoying.

The guy screaming at 6:17 is hilarious!
The Saturn commercials were definitely the weirdest SEGA commercials.

The Saturn had next to zero ads in the UK (I remember a NiGHTS one, a Sonic R one, and that’s about it) and these American ones are not very good. It’s all about Segata Sanshiro, he single handily saved the Saturn’s arse in Japan. If only we had him over here too..

The only Saturn ad I remember here in the US was the NiGHTS one. That screaming blob used to scare me.

Yeah, you don’t need drugs to trip off a Saturn Commercial. I really enjoyed the Sonic R ad.
Dreamcast commercials are funny and cool!

That video isn’t a commercial, it’s a promo video put together by Sega. I assume it was played at events like CES and E3. In any case, the Saturn commercials sucked, especially after Sega’s greatest period of advertising with the Genesis.
