Confirmed: No maracas for Samba De Amigo Wii

Well we were all hoping and praying that Sega might bless us with some funky new peripherals for their upcoming Wii title, Samba De Amigo. But it seems like those dreams have been dashed, as IGN recently spoke with Sega on the subject.
“The Wii’s controllers enable players to enjoy Samba De Amigo’s unique gameplay without having to purchase an expensive peripheral,” said Rick Naylor, Director of Marketing at SEGA.
While the concept of waving and shaking your Wiimote and Nunchuck around to the game sounds like fun… hold on isn’t that what you do with every other Wii game?! (I kid).
Where was I?
While that does sound fun, many gamers were hoping that Sega might go back to the Dreamcast days and release some new maracas for the Wii version. Because even though the Wii controllers no doubt work fine, and make the correct sounds (via Wiimotes mic), I think many would agree that holding realistic feeling/looking maracas in hand just adds that little extra something to the whole experience.
It’s great that the Wii can allow gamers to play such quirky games without the need of buying expensive, unique controllers, like with Sega Bass Fishing. But there comes a time when these controllers can really add to the gameplay, and it would be great if gamers had the option of buying them. Imagine trying to play Guitar Hero without the guitar controller? - Urgh, definitely not as much fun!
Still fingers crossed that Sega can get the Wii controls working perfectly.

I respectfully disagree :). The original DC version was released with the maracas for 70$ in addition to the 30$ game. That’s 100$ that most people didn’t spend to play the game, and a real shame too. I think the wii-motes are the most ideal method for shaking my samba-ass, and the price is right for me as well.
I like the original samba, and I’m happy to see that people will actually get a chance to play it as intended on Wii!

Well I think we are all happy that Sega can release the game at a cheaper price, without needing extra controllers. But still - Maracas would be better I think - from what I keep reading, the Wiimote and nunchuck just don’t feel quite the same.
Also if Sega could pimp this game out well enough I think people might be willing to pay a bit more - Donkey konga, Guitar Hero and SingStar games are an example of how these games can be popular, even when you need to pay more.
Ultimately it would be good if there was an optional Maraca accessory you could buy.

For music games, having an instrument is always better.

maracas are gay.

Well, the whole concept is wrong anyway. Like Brazilians are the same as mexicans. The same way the Japanese are the same as Chinese. So I don’t really care :-)

This was confirmed awhile back I thought. Might have been me just assuming.

“from what I keep reading, the Wiimote and nunchuck just don’t feel quite the same.”
I still think that a majority of people never played Samba with the maracas to begin with, so it’s relative.
There’s a major difference to a game like Guitar Hero, where you really do need the guitar extension to properly play the game, same goes for Rock Band with the Drums. There are no controllers that mimic either instrument perfectly to be a viable replacement.
Maracas are shakable instruments, and the Wii-motes are perfect for shaking, it just seems like a no brainer. It’s weird too, the original got slammed for having the Maracas be so expensive and hard to find.
To each his own I guess.

Sega would be very very retarded if they would have bundled the game with maracas. More peripheral crap that isn’t needed when the Remote and Nunchuk are more than capable. So what if they aren’t shaped like maracas? If that is so important to some people, then they should learn how to play the real things. Can’t be very hard though; it’s a latin instrument, and we all know they are lazy buggers! :D

What they could do is make plastic peripherals to fit over the nunchuk / wiimote, ala those nerf additions for wii sports. I mean, how expensive can painted plastic pieces with bits of plastic inside cost? There aren’t any electronics involved, and they could charge $20 and make a killing.

Apparently a lot, why do you think Wiimotes and nunchucks cost like 60?

I think it may be a good idea, actually. After all, they’re designing this game strictly so you have a Wii game that allows you to use the Nunchuk and Wii-mote. NiGHTS JoD tried to do that and failed miserably so i think they’re trying to make up for that.
Making yet ANOTHER kinda peripheral for the Wii is just pointless. Seriously. That console has so many already and the only game that will most probably use the maracas anyway will be this one. Waste of money in the long run, in my opinion. I think sega may have made the right choice here. Sure, it may not cost much to make but a cost is still a cost and when you’re dealing with a company who steps into the 100 million territory then you know it ain’t no loose change they’re taking out of their wallets.

Agree with DiGi.
Anyway, what’s wrong with Wiimote + Nunchuk marcas anyway?

@ DiGi - How many controller peripherals does the Wii really have?
The only one I can think of is the Guitar (for Guitar Hero) and also the Classic Controller.
Yeah you have the weird plastic things you can add to your controller - to make it look like a golf club etc…
But those are not mandatory and don’t do anything to change gameplay.
I know what you guys mean. And (I’ll say again) it is a good thing that it saves money for consumers. But it would be cool to have a choice for seperate controllers - ESPECIALLY as I keep reading how the normal controller setup for the Wii doesn’t feel right.
-I’m just wanting Sega to make the game as brilliant as we all know it can be.
-Like Sega Bass Fishing. Great that you don’t need a special rod controller, and can use the Wii controller to replicate the actions of a rod - but in reality the game felt very lacking compared to the arcade and DC versions of the game - because the controls weren’t quite correct.

Why would anyone even care about maraca controllers…
This is easily the most frivolous and shallow complaint I’ve ever heard involving videogames - and that’s saying a lot.
It doesn’t “feel right”? Sorry, but I don’t listen to people who talk in obtuse terms, and back up arguments with vague and intangible reasoning.

@ James
Would you play virtua cop with a gamepad? Or DDR? Or HotD with a wiimote in one hand the nunchuk in the other? You could, but you lose the spirit of the game (e.g., what’s the point?).
I would head to youtube and search for “Samba de Amigo dreamcast” to understand the concern/gripe.

The controller wouldn’t need to be expensive like the old one. Just make plastic attachments for two wii remotes with rattles in them. Simple. It’s mainly the real rattle that made the maracas on Dreamcast so good.
Still, even if Sega doesn’t feel like making maracas for the Wii version like that, I wouldn’t be surprised if a third party decided to step in if the game proves popular.

The thing people also need to keep in mind is that this game is a Dreamcast remake, meaning it’s like really old and quite a few gamers have already played it before.
Because of that, most people won’t be willing to spend full price on a remake, even if it’s packed in with a peripheral.
Sega made the wise decision to stick with the Wiimote/nunchuck combo to keep the price low.
This game MUST be budget priced to stand a chance at even hitting 100K sold.
But hey, if you still feel the need to hear it make some noise, go to the store and by a couple baby rattles and tape. Tape the rattles to the Wiimote and BAM! You have your maracas for about $6.

Chris: the game was so expensive when it was originally released that I believe only a select few people have played it. Many people outside of Sega fans haven’t even heard of Samba De Amigo. Like Okami, Samba is being remade because it deserves a second chance.
