New Sonic Unleashed info revealed

by George on April 9th, 2008

Yoshihiso Hashimoto has an interview in this month’s Nintendo Magazine. In it, he reveals that Sonic Unleashed began life as Sonic Adventure 3. He also confirmed that the game isn’t being made by multiple teams. I know there was people (like me) hoping that Sega-AM2 had a hand in development, but that’s just too bad.

Hashimoto goes as far as saying that the game has nothing in common with Sonic ‘06 (aka Silver the Hedgehog) and Sonic and the Secret of the Rings, but that it has more in common with the older games like Sonic Adventure.

As for everyone’s grave concern for Sonic the Werewolf (aka Werehog). Hashimoto gave a overview on how he will play:

“… a slightly slower and yet more agile beast. Where Sonic dodges past obstacles, Were-Sonic manhandles them out of the way and can toss enemies around like nobody’s business.”

Being a bit slower sounds good, but I don’t like the attack idea of throwing enemies. Regular old spindash, roll, and jumping is still enough for more. Hopefully you can still do all of those and enemies don’t have shitty hit points that totally kill the sense of speed.

Yeah, me and Ryan where talking about how it werewolf stages should be slower, like Sonic 2. More plateforming to make up for the really fast looking Sonic stages. Sounds like too good of a idea, we’ll see.

“Sonic Unleashed started life as Sonic Adventure 3″

I have never read something so beautiful in a long long time.

    On another note:
I was not quite impressed with the trailers/teasers of Sonic Unleashed, I hate the idea of a side scrolling Sonic game just because Sonic Team is unable to fix basic camera problems.

I would rather they just made it so there was Sonic levels with speed and Sonic levels with platforming… With out transforming…

The werewolf thing is still pretty silly… I wish they made platforming and speed but kept it all just NORMAL SONIC.

People like the idea of Sonic Adventure 3?

I’m glad they scraped that. I’m sick of it, personally. I want regular Sonic games - like this.

It’s all talk about this starting life as Sonic Adventure 3, SEGA’s PR department knows what to say.

Yes an animal transforming into another animal is quite stupid, but then again the concept of a blue ultra fast hedgehog, who the hell came up with that?

Why make a game based on a hedgehog, Sega would be better of making games on Bandicot’s wearing Jeans.

I’m a little torn at the moment.

On the one hand, I keep thinking “Okay, TWO characters (Sonic/Were-Sonic), I can live with that… But if they start adding more, I’m going to be so pissed…”

But on the other hand, if all the levels are this old-school 2D/on-rails 3D, and it was OPTIONAL to play with other characters (say, on a second playthrough), I’d be more than happy to blast through the game again with Tails, Knuckles, or, say, Metal Sonic.

“He also traverses levels by swinging on overly-long arms instead of running.”

Hah. This reminds me of Ristar…

Still looks like way too much mindless speed and reaction timing, nowhere near enough platforming and exploration. I’ll be watching future videos that show level design very carefully.

And this game will have to do a LOT to make up for a speed meter. The speed meter could be the worst addition to Sonic in a long time.

When you mentioned Sega-AM2 I, for some unfathomable reason, imagined Sonic standing in the corner of a level asking passers-by if they wanted to try a game of Lucky Hit.

So why they don’t continue with Sonic Adventure 3 instead of Sonic Rush 3 aka Sonic Unleashed? :(

The day/night cycle looks pretty cool, actually. If you look at the screenshots, you can see that it’s not just day/night - the stages have different lighting effects during different parts of the day - morning, noon, afternoon, evening, night, like Chaotix did, and Sonic ‘06 was originally supposed to.

Having a real day-night cycle with different parts of the day, would be pretty cool.

Maybe you could choose in the adventure field, to enter a level even at sunset!
