New Sonic Unleashed teaser

by Ryan on April 7th, 2008

Well, that was… different.

Sega just released this short CGI teaser trailer for Sonic Unleashed and well… I’m still not exactly sure what to say about it. So what does it tell us? Well it confirms that Sonic will turn into an angry werewolf at night, It also hints at dodgy voice acting. Oh and it confirms Sonic has fingernails which I’m sure will be a hot topic on any Sonic forum I’ll never go to.

On the bright side, if the werewolf thing turns out to be crap at least the other half of the game looks awesome, the glass is half full.

Tune sounds familar to me, but maybe I’m reading too much into that. Also Were-Sonic, okay then, nice to know, bye then.

Tune sounds like a Song from Disneys Aladdin.

    Oh, Sega.

    Sega, Sega, Sega.

What are we going to do with you?

Seriously though, they just released a trailer of a normal Sonic transforming into an angry beast and smashing a ring (the most iconic piece of Sonic paraphernalia and one of the strongest remaining links the current iterations of the series have to classic Sonic games) into the ground in an infuriated rage.

Wherever they’re headed, it clearly isn’t back to the series’s roots. I can’t see this teaser doing anything but damage amongst longtime fans. Perhaps it will appeal to the younger crowd, though.

“Perhaps it will appeal to the younger crowd, though”

The younger crowd can suck it…

Disclaimer: As long as they are over 18… (hot and female preferably)

Believe me, I’m about as enthusiastic as you are about this particular development.

And it’s 18, Ryan. The age of consent is 18.

Not in the UK… But urh, I’ll change it.

Interesting that a 35 second clip made a lot of you say this game isn’t worth your time, money, or attention.

Said it before and I’ll say it again, I’ll wait for gameplay, thanks.

Well I thought that was friggin’ awesome. I don’t know why you guys are complaining.

Also, to those wondering, the tune he’s whistling is Angel Island Zone.

I’d rather wait for some gameplay information on this game before I jump to any conclusions.

I’m not saying the game will suck, I’m saying Sega (perhaps it’s Sonic Team, or perhaps just the marketing department) is completely out of touch with what people want out of a Sonic game. This trailer’s message is, in no uncertain terms, that the classic, ring-based Sonic gameplay we have seen in trailers (official and otherwise) thus far will take a backseat (or at the very least will be challenged significantly in overall gameplay emphasis) to the combat segments based around Were-Sonic as officially confirmed in the recent press release.

As far as this teaser is concerned none of the stuff we’ve seen up to now is even the real focus of this game. Teasers like this aren’t just made for the hell of it. They have a message- and this one’s message doesn’t bode well for the game’s balance of “normal” and combat segments. It is half and half, with the combat figuratively pulverizing the former (often associated with the “classic”) gameplay style.

Even more worrying is the fact that Sega hasn’t shown anyone the combat segments they’re playing up. They are certainly doing a good job at drawing attention to them, but with so much ill-will bred over the past half-decade due to crappy alternate gameplay styles in Sonic games, such publicity will only serve to spread doubts about the game’s quality- as seen thus far in most reactions to the trailer. They have to show that it can be (even, dare I say, prove it IS) a truly enjoyable experience to beat enemies up as a giant, feral Were-Sonic before they can talk said talk and not have it thrown back in their faces.

ive already saved up 400 dollars for me to buy an xbox 360/sonic unleashed/and THE RUMORED, NIGHTS FOR XBOX AND PS3… so i actually like the concept of transforming into a ‘DARK FORCE’ sorta reminds me of DARK SPIDERMAN…lol im intrigued and just hopeful… btw.. sonic team is a joke…..

I HOPE YOU READ THESE COMMENT SO YOU CAN PROVE ALL THE LOYAL SEGA FANS WRONG AND MAKE US PROUD!

I don’t think Sonic smashing a ring symbolises anything. It’s just a stupid trailer.

Anyway, I’m glad to see that Sonic finally goes nude. I hope his shoes are gone too.

“Even more worrying is the fact that Sega hasn’t shown anyone the combat segments they’re playing up”

I think they’re saving them for the gamer’s day or E3 event, if E3 still exists (I have no idea on that matter actually)

And hey, Dr. SEGA Monkey, your right! Pretty neat they put in the Angel Island song there.

“So what does it tell us?”

Like pretty much anything labeled a “teaser”: not a goddamn thing.

I can’t understand why they thought this “Were-Sonic” crap was needed at all.

“I can’t understand why they thought this “Were-Sonic” crap was needed at all.”

It all goes back to an old interview with… I forget who, a bigwig at Sonic Team/ST USA (was it Yuji Naka when he was still there? I forget) about how gamers were obsessed with having “more and more gameplay modes”.

At the time they seemed convinced that a game that was simply Sonic would be panned for not having enough “variety” or “depth”.

Changing the subject, I personally don’t associate rings with just “classic” Sonic, but Sonic as a whole, past AND present–they’re in every game. “Classic” Sonic just happened to be the first.

What’s really wrong here is, he’s now all fluffy instead of spiny.

Oh, and of course the game’ll be balls, you all can snap out of it already.

Has it occurred to anyone to actually wait until we see these “Were-Sonic” sections before we label them crap?

That’s not giving Sonic Team the benefit of the doubt… that’s just common sense. I’ll gladly call them out as crap when I get to see them, but for all we know, they might (shock horror) be kinda fun.

I honestly don’t know what everyone’s problem is. But then, I guess if Sonic and Knuckles were to be released now, everyone would be going on about how pointless the addition of Knuckles is, and how gliding and climbing isn’t as fun as running and that they should “go back to their roots.”

  • Kogen
    Apr 7, 2008 at 8:14 pm

One half of it will be bigger than the other?

And he turns into a werewolf, what do you expect?

  • Mark
    Apr 7, 2008 at 8:22 pm

That don’t sound like Angel Island’s tune to me..

  • ChaosAngelZero
    Apr 7, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Knuckles’ gameplay in S&K was the same as Sonic plus two new features and different routes that let you explore more of those gigantic levels.
These will most probably be two altogether separate, incongruent gameplay systems that may very well even run off of two different game engines, almost Sonic Adventure 2-style. And the Sonic segments already seem to be a bunch of obstacles and enemies waiting to be evaded and knocked down, respectively.

As far as the teaser goes I am with Dr. Sega Monkey. I liked it! Thought it was pretty funny.

As for the actual game.. well I am going to hold out my judgment for once I actually play the game or see more real gameplay clips.

In 1992 I was amazed to see Sonic transforming into a golden haired super hedgehog, like my hero Goku. Now, sonic transforms into an aggressive furry beast, just like goku, IT IS TOTALLY A CLASSIC SONIC lol

Good catch Dr. on Angel Island.

I am with Landman there. The beast part reminds me Goku turning into a this huge gorilla … I will as well hold my judgement. But I think some comments are being too overly negative for the sake of being negative …

We already knew we were going to get an uber crappy plot/gimmick. Sonic Team will no doubt make it there business to try an ruin the experience as much as possible with it, so I hope the gameplay can overshadow it some.

  • crackdude
    Apr 8, 2008 at 10:57 am

    landman is right.
Back then if they told you that Sonic would turn hairy and violent instead of happy and yellow, you’d shit your pants of awsomeness!

Just think about it! If the gameplay is good, then why not?
Remember Shadow? He was just a black clone of Sonic… “Boo! We want new stuff!” But it turned out great! Here’s your new stuff now! Why not?
