Sonic ‘Leashed:’ Sega threatens legal action against Destructoid

by Chris on March 28th, 2008

[veoh v6526012hNmtRRCd]

It appears Sega didn’t take too kindly to the coverage Destructoid had been giving Sonic Unleashed this past week and has reportedly threatened legal action against the blog if it didn’t remove all posts containing the leaked screens and video. Destructoid bowed to Sega’s iron fist and has removed all posts.

We don’t know if it’s due to our e-mail problems the past week or if Sega just loves us, but we’ve received no nasty emails from Sega yet. Plus, Destructoid’s Jim Sterling complains that Sega’s spurned his persistent requests for a review copy of Viking: Battle for Asgard. You may know, we not only received our copy awhile back and have already reviewed the game, but we also interviewed the Mark O’Connell from The Creative Assembly. Sorry again, Destructoid!

Having said that, I present you with a higher resolution Sonic Unleashed video for your viewing pleasure.

To be fair, Destructoid kind of sucks.

But yeah, hey, lighten up, Sega.

They only ruined your E3 event or something, calm down!

They have every right to tell people to take it down when it’s not officially released.

I would’ve wished this sort of thing back when they had Robert Summa as a reviewer, but now the site’s pretty cool! Sucks for them to be singled out (so far).

There is not anything new in the video. I only watched it twice.

But none ofthe bigger sites have taken their Sonic unleashed vids down so why Destructoid? I reckon it must be more than that. they must have said something that Sega officials didn’t like. Not suprised, Sega knows who their supporters are and who aren’t. Which is probably why sega nerds hasn’t been hassled since they feel you lot are alright. If they do want them all down they’ll probably ask Chris politely to take them down.

I was really only referring to singling out Destructiod, as it didn’t really do anything to stem the tide of media that the leak had produced. It’s not really a sensible move however you look at it, and just serves to piss off the Destructoid community at large, which didn’t do anything worse* than all the other gaming news sites, us included.

*Well, okay, they’re whiny, immature and insist on interpreting almost everything that doesn’t mesh with their world view as a personal affront to be immediately countered with nonsensical (often hilarious) vitriol, but that’s pretty much par for the course.

Lol!, now I am waiting for a little Shenmue III info…like the way happened
to Sonic Unleashed …CUZ Shenmue III is around(but hidden)
and if you see KIKIZO’s new news at here http://games.kikizo.com/news/200803/047_p4.asp (Out Run 3 on the way!) then you will believe that they did NOT lie about Shenmue III is ready.

Well it was SEGA of America’s fault really.

SEGA of America seems to like screwing up a lot for some reason, they just seem different to SEGA of Euopre and Japan when it comes to quality and how they work, or that is how I feel.

    @ Hudson:

What’s the score with the Destructoid hate? Sounds like you’re referring to a few incidents with writers or community members, and not the Web site as a whole. To make a sweeping statement like that is a bit unfair to the talented and dedicated folks who work hard on the content that appears on Destructoid.

Granted, I’m biased. But hey …

    Nick,

I think it’s just more of the overall editorial direction of the site’s writing that bothers a lot of people. I’m sure there are a lot of talented writers on staff, but, in general, the posts are way too wordy and full non-important information that really serves no purpose.

Well, SEGA has been removing most of the Unleashed videos on YouTube, and they asked me to remove the images we had hosted at eXophase.com. Joystiq was contacted as well.

Seems a bit silly though, seeing as the media is everywhere by now.

    @ Chris,

Fair enough, but believe it or not, a lot of our readers prefer that style. There are many Web sites where you can read regurgitated press releases or more formal approaches to industry news. Destructoid is not one of those Web sites.

It’s not to say one style or approach is better than another; I guess it comes down to personal preference.
