Sonic Unleashed possibly revealed

by Chris on March 22nd, 2008

unleashed-425.jpg

After we broke news that Sega trademarked Sonic Unleashed, we now have word that a set of screens from the game may have been inadvertently posted and released on Sega’s FTP site. A sleek-eyed forum goer named Aisha ClanClan Prower at the EspioKaos forums found the images and posted them on the site.

These screens look pretty magnificent, and it appears that Sonic will make a return trip to the desert, but thankfully, Robotnik returns to try to kill our favorite blue hedgehog.

Now here are a few things we’ve noticed from these screens:

  • The resolution for the images is set at 1280×720 (720p), which means the game is probably being developed for the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 since the Wii only supports 480p. However, that doesn’t mean the game couldn’t be ported.
  • There’s actually nothing in the images that suggests the game is indeed Sonic Unleashed. And unless Sega just recently settled on a name for a game that’s obviously been in development for some time, it’d be pretty strange to see the name trademarked so late in its development cycle.

I see Sonic smiling, but not that arrogant smile from recent titles. Wow

    Yeah! : D :D :D :D

Yeah, the image with the smile scores high in my book. The way I see Sonic is that he’s having fun, not “look at me, I’m cool” that he’s been portrayed as since 98. I’m looking this as Sonic’s last chance to regain his spotlight, really.

Graphics look good. And their seems to be a variety of locales.

It looks amazing. Let’s just hope it plays well!

Is that a speed bar on the bottom (4th row 1st pic)?

It seems like he’s got a move to dash from side to side (may have had it in previous games, but I’ve never noticed it)

I really really really like the graphics here. God I hope it plays well.

this game looks so cool and real, im still thinking if its gonna be for the xbox 360,PS3, or Wii… But Sonic seems to be more dramatic and “yelly” in this game, why is he yelling?

I hope it isnt onrails -_-…

Graphics look great, and have a good art direction, which is a good sign.

But it’s very important to not get our hopes up. This will most definetly not be a return to the roots.

I have heard that the settings are based on real life locations…. I HATE that. You’re a blue speedy hedgehog for crying out loud - I want the original settings of the Megadrive games again! Not real life locations!

I know its way too early to tell but the super linear look of the levels so far kind of implies that the game will be on rails. Especially the ones with Sonic dodging the boxes and swerving in the sand.

Also, I could be wrong but didn’t Sega once claim they would stay away from 360/ps3 sonic games based on the piss poor reception of Sonic 06?

Actually the speed bar also strongly suggests on rails gameplay seeing as they’re usually only displayed in racing games. Maybe what we’re looking at here is the Sequel to Sonic Wildfire on a next gen system.

Maybe this is running on the SATSR engine.

Sonic, look out! Eggman’s going to sneak up and hug you if you don’t TURN AROUND

This looks wonderful in my opinion. I really hope it makes it to Wii.

Just a correction: the Wii runs on 480i and 480p.

    Mar 22, 2008 at 11:17 am

This is not on Wii, the screens are outputted in 720p, something the Wii isn’t capable of. I hope it isn’t on Wii either, last thing we need is Sonic Team working on 3 plateforms at the same time.

That “piss poor” reception, radrappy, made them a profit in the long run.

The only thing I’m worried about is the gameplay, it looks like it’s on rails and I fucking hate that. Hopefully that will only be part of the game(Sonic 06′ had those too, for example).

These screens look so friggin awesome.

    It’s a Wii game and that’s a fact. Don’t be silly.

  • Kogen
    Mar 22, 2008 at 2:16 pm

You’re a dumbarse and that’s a fact. No where is it stated that this is a Wii game exclusively.

It could certainly be on Wii, though.

There is no way in hell that this is a Wii game. Those in-game shots look TOO good for the Wii to handle.

  • Hudson
    Mar 22, 2008 at 2:25 pm

Based on what look like the only actual gameplay shots in the gallery (10, 12, 13, maybe a few others around there) I’d bank on this being the follow up to Secret Rings. Considering the absolutely gorgeous locales in Galaxy I wouldn’t be surprised if they’d figured out how to make a Sonic title all shiny and relatively purdy on the Wii. These shots in particular are probably representative of how the game looks now, and how it plays (on rails, though #13 has me curious to say the least).

Discernable plot: Sonic starts the game with the emeralds and loses them (sort of like Sonic 3) thanks to a nefarious plot by Eggman. He spends the game getting them back, which might be a good way to simplify the “ring” system of upgrades from Secret Rings into a less confusing, muddled mess (or possibly just a plot point like it was in Adventure). It’s fairly easy to reorder the screenshots’ order to put together this plot skeleton, and if this isn’t the BEST HOAX EVAR I’m pretty confident in above analysis.

Oh, and apparently the Zurg attack at some point? If it wasn’t in the same gallery I’d never think that #9 was part of the same game.

Only Sonic so far, but that was how Sonic Next was, too. Temper your expectations, lads, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

i think this is a new type of genre, like speed-rail or something and not an actual sonic ip… maybe its good.. all i hope for is quality.1

  • Hudson
    Mar 22, 2008 at 2:32 pm

(Oh hey there’s a bit about the resolution, so I guess it’s probably not on the Wii after all. Heh.)

  • udx
    Mar 22, 2008 at 2:40 pm

I don’t expect my expectations to be high on this game(Considering that I’m sticking with Sonic Chronicles for the time being).

However, after I overhyped Smash Bros Brawl to hell and back, I’ve learned my lesson and I won’t be doing the overhype thing again.

  • Kogen
    Mar 22, 2008 at 2:44 pm

If it’s similar to Secret Rings and considering how much of an issue people have made about Sonic 06′, I really doubt we’ll have 12 characters this time.

I’m really hoping they go for the Sonic 3 & Knuckles approach; Secret Rings did that as far as story was concerned(in a basic sense) and it sold well without the need for that ‘other’ stuff.

I’ll go ON THE RECORD as saying “Whatever this game is, is going to be the best Sonic game of all time.”

    Choke on that, ya jackasses.

Again, this is way too much information in one day.
I smell a press release from Sega this week…

I hope this doesn’t suck like every Sonic game has for the past 3 years.

But I’m not getting my hopes up. Sonic Team WILL find a way to screw up, and I know it.

The wii might be capable of this . Maybe not the floor and wall textures, but the wii can definetly produse the character models and dust effects. It looks promising.
