Sega files trademark for Sonic Unleashed
It was only yesterday that we brought you word of Sega filing for a trademark for Storm Chaser. Actually, one of our forum members spread word about it literally months ago. However, that’s not why we’re here in this quaint little post now.
One of our forum sleuths have unearthed yet another Sega trademark that was filed March 6 for a new Sonic title called Sonic Unleashed. Of course, there’s not really a lot of information at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s website about the game, but it was definitely filed by Sega.
If this is a new Sonic console game, we’re hoping Sega can build upon the positive experience of Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Positive experience of Sonic Wildfire?
I’ll just say what’s true: Sonic 06 is a better game than that on-rails piece of childish shite with horrible controls. The only reason it seems better is because they dropped all the Shadow/Blaze/Silver bullshite. As a gameplay experience, it sucks.
Hopefully this is a real game now with actual good gameplay and no post-2001 crap they call a story.

Ouch! I thought Secret Rings was pretty good, myself; Sonic ‘06 was better than Sonic Heroes for sure, but I’m not quite sure how I feel beyond that.
I’m placing my bets on Unleashed being a side-scrolling something-or-other on one of the handhelds.

…Kogen stole my comment! NO! *cries in a corner*
…Does that mean someone else other than me thought that SatSR was shite? *leaps out of corner*
Took your time.

I want this to be a 3D Plattformer for PS3/360, thought, i still want it to be a classic 2D sidescroller for wathever console, PS2 would be awsome. As long as its not a downloadable game.

I’m with Pur and Kogen on this. I hope it is a 360 game, but the first thing I thought when I heard “Unleashed” was “2D game compilation for Handhelds.”
Please let it be as good as Sega Genesis Collection in that event.

SEGA Genesis Collection wasn’t superb or anything, just “good”. I’d expect more from a port of just a dozen Sonic games.
I suspect this is a new game and not a collection.

Bah, all the modern Sonic and Genesis game compilations (aside from a number of SEGA AGES games) lack the love that was put into Sonic Jam.

I hope this game takes everything from Sonic on the Wii craps on it and then sets it on fire.
I DON’T WANT ONRAIL SONIC GAMES.
I want to play as Sonic only,
2D/3D or a mixture of both I don’t mind as long as it’s good.
No more melo drama stories or conry power ranger scripts,
no more corny music.

Again you fall into retardism. Why only Sonic? The game could have 1 or 40 characters, yet it could still be a pile of shite(Sonic and the Secret Rings) or great.
What matters is the game is a real Sonic game and it’s made by people with some sense of what they’re doing. I’m sure people here with no experience in making games could design the game better than those currently doing it.
Basically it doesn’t matter how many characters there are, just as long as they’re good characters.

I don’t understand all the hate about Sonic Wii’s rails system. To me, the rail system makes it more like the classic 2D Sonics than any other 3D version in the series.
You see, in 2D, you’re basically on rails too given the fact that you lack the third dimension. In a way, keeping you on rails does the same thing because you don’t have the freedom to move sideways. That allows Sonic Team to focus on what makes Sonic awesome - moving really, really fast.
Of course I’d like Sega to develop a great true 3D Sonic game, but since Sonic Adventure, we’ve been pretty disappointed with all of its offerings. That’s why I wouldn’t be too upset for another game similar to Sonic Wii.

I wouldn’t mind another Sonic Wii title that is on-rails. But then again, I wouldn’t mind if a) They let you use the Nunchuck in moving Sonic, b) Mii support as optional characters c) Custom soundtrack just for the hell of it.

On rails boo hoo rails hoo boo hoo
ONE game in the entire fucking series has on rails gameplay and nearly 3/4s of the entire sonic fandom shits an elephant.
It wasn’t a fantastic game but with tweaking and sprucing, the engine might yield something worth playing. Give it a chance. Is Sonic Adventure 3 all everyone honestly wants?
I’m mostly with you kogen on the characters front (not that I WANT Sonic and the 108 stars of destiny) but I do honestly wish these people would embrace the philosophy of “less is more” at least once. Wildfire was an improvement in that sense.

“That allows Sonic Team to focus on what makes Sonic awesome - moving really, really fast”
That’s wrong Chris actually; Sonic was all about building momentum, containing it and doing funky little gimmicky things with physics.
What I don’t understand is the perfect Sonic engine has already been made by SEGA and used several times. Super Monkey Ball has the speed and momentum building of the original games as well as have good physics to the engine, why no one has decided to use this engine is beyond me, it’s perfect for Sonic and would make more money then any Super Monkey Ball game ever.
Though I agree with Kogen, more characters is a good thing if they can be done right, there is a reason why a lot of people considering Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles their favourite game in the series (Not me, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is mine) the fact that you could play the same level, with TOTALLY different routes for 2/3 of the characters playable was pretty darn amazing.

The 2D games weren’t on rails. I don’t know where you’re getting this bullshite from, Chris. On Wii you can’t even look behind yourself and you’re ALWAYS going forward(unless you want to kill yourself going backwards). The 2D games were nothing like that(the DIMPS series is, at times).
I wasn’t serious when I said there should be 40 characters, obviously, but 6 worked fine in Sonic Adventure(Sonic main, Tails/Knuckles/Gamma secondary, Big/Amy as lesser characters). That’s a good model to follow if they have the resources to do that many characters. Any Sonic game should have at the least Sonic and Tails(plus mini-games/special stages), then they have a rather large pool of good characters to have playable along with them if they can get it into the game without making it suck. Examples are Knuckles, Metal & Silver Sonic, Fang, Espio, Amy, Vector, Eggman(referring to him as playable, he’s actually an important main character too), Mighty, and more.
Another thing they need is the ball physics thing the games completely lack since Sonic Adventure in the 3D series(even then it was minor). Monkey Ball isn’t a good idea at all, it would need better control than that. I played Kameo, an average platformer on 360, and it fucking had spindash on one of the elemental character things. Why can’t they do that with Sonic? It wasn’t a good spindash, but it was still a spindash and it worked like a real ball - it was even an animal rolled up doing it(you could do it in mid air too, would be great for a homing attack thing).
Basically common sense needs to be applied, SEGA has to look at what they’ve done in the past and what others are doing now in platformers, and they need to kill the small amount of horrible characters that are ruining an otherwise good franchise with great characters. The only “big” characters I can see that are ruining it are the obvious ones; Shadow, Blaze, Rouge, Omega, Eggman Nega, Sonic Riders Birds, and Silver. Minor crap ones like Cream(could a character be anymore childish?) don’t really hurt the franchise much. The “big” ones are a problem because they actually end up replacing all the good ones(remember when Tails and Knuckles were main characters?) and even fucking Sonic a lot of the time.

I Agree with Kogen, Sonic 06 is far better than Sonic and the Secret Rails!!!
Hope this Sonic Unleashed will be the REAL NEXT GEN SONIC (it means no Wii or budget games on mobile phone), the one we see at E3 05, a Sonic FREE with a huge world to explore FREE at HIGH SPEED (Oblivion meet Sonic? :D ), finally an evolution of Sonic Adventure formula.

Well a “free” world would be fine, but it’d have to be the adventure field and not the entire game. Sonic needs action stages.

@ Kogen: Obviously when I said Monkey Ball, I didn’t mean a complete like for like copy. It would be pretty easy to mod that engine into making a Sonic game, and the engine is a proven to be good already, just slight tweaking by someone who can actually program correctly.

Let’s hope that, in this theoretical situation of yours, Amusement Vision is more willing to fork their engine over than a mid-90s Sonic Team was!

Of course.
But Sonic need more freedom also during action stages.

Kugan you are a moronic simpleton living in the past, nobody wants to go back to the past and nobody cares, all we want is a good Sonic game with good gameplay.
Firstly they should stick with the popular characters, which are Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow and Eggman. Those are the top four characters that people like, and would play as. The characters aren’t the problem it’s the overall presentation their given and how they confuse the plotline. But anyway. Those four should be the main mains, while amy, rouge, cream and Metal Sonic should be the minor mains. As NPC’s. Secondly we should design more levels like in adventure for the 3d games, and more classic Sonicness in the 2d games like Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure. Silver and other characters aren’t bad, they can be unlockables. Then about Sonic, he should start acting like his Sonic Adventure self. We should have a game where Shadow is badass and cool again and Tails and Knuckles are more than sidekicks.
But please no more bitching about the goddamn classics and the Sonic retro way, it’s not happening in this day and age. Sonic needs to tend to his roots but not start all over from the beginning.

what do you guys think about being able to use super sonic any level you want by collecting 50 rings and doulbe jumping, ya know, instead of the last level. like the originals.{sonic 2, 3, and knuckles}. kinda tried of the limitations and miss the super emeralds.
