Sega shipped Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer to retailers a few days ago, but I’m still waiting on my copy of show up in my mailbox. Until then, we’re going to have to look at what the other guys are scoring Sega’s newest Nintendo DS title.
- 1up scores it 83/100: It’s far more demanding than its fellow DS-based roguelikes, lacking, say, the cuddly mascots of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon or the cumulative experience-building of Izuna. But it’s remarkably well crafted, with streamlined gameplay that belies its impressive substance.
- Nintendo Power scores it 65/100: Starting from scratch every time you have bad luck will be frustrating, but if you can get past the setbacks, you’ll enjoy a solid DS adventure.
- IGN scores it 65/100: The random dungeons are oftentimes poorly laid out, and the turn based gameplay can lead to a slow, jerky experience. Still, Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer is a game that will certainly give players a run for their money, if only due to the fact that it takes forever to beat.
Not too shabby so far, but with the game so new, there aren’t a ton of reviews available yet to go by. So if there are any Sega Nerds out there who already own the game, why don’t you tell us what you think of the game.

I’m honestly not too sure of what to think of this yet.

The 1up review is the only one that I think really understands the game. Jeremy Parish put a great post on his site about it as well: http://www.toastyfrog.com/verbalspew/archives/entry_546.php
So far, I’m absolutely fascinated by the game. There’s not a lot out there like it. The only other Roguelike game I’ve even played was Fatal Labyrinth on the Genesis/Megadrive. It was an OK game, but I really loved the randomness to it. I never realized there was a whole genre of games like this.
I’m so glad Sega actually brought this one out. They deserved to be rewarded for it, buy the game!
