Do you agree with Gametrailers’ review of The Club?

Thanks to Graham living in England, we were able to post our The Club review weeks ago, but since the game just released in the States this week, us North Americans are just now seeing the rest of the reviews.

Normally, we don’t really care about other site’s reviews of Sega games. Why would we when we review them, too, right? Well, the only reason that we’re talking about Gametrailers’ review of The Club today is because it showcases more of the game’s beautiful gameplay, and they make some points that we really agree with and some that we definitely don’t.

Perhaps the one line that I find most ridiculous in the review is:

The Club, on a whole, would have been a ‘triple A’ game in the dawn of the PlayStation and N64 era. In 2008, its charms and appeal are still apparent, but a little too familiar.”

Now, the first part I completely agree with, but I’m just not understanding the reasoning behind it being too familiar. Sure, it’s a third-person shooter, but the entire gameplay is drastically different than anything we’ve seen before. I think Gametrailers missed the point of the game, which is sad.

Bastards. They only want games where you take cover for 99 percent of the game and has shitty brown ugly graphics and gloom galore.

Uh, George, are you implying The Club is a better game than Gears of War?

Of course, Gears of War was shit.

I like their reference to the online multiplayer with spawn camping “…ripped straight from 1993…”

Of course! 1993 that fateful year of non-stop online deathmatches with spawn campers galore…. oh wait…

-I don’t recall there being much online play back then.
In fact I don’t recall many 3rd person shooters 1993 .
I don’t recall there being that many 3D games and especially multiplayer shoot ‘em ups!

Where the hell did this guy get 1993 from?

They missed the point, utterly! The game is like NiGHTS, only with guns and shooting! The game, like NiGHTS, is based on chaining links together, and like NiGHTS, your meant to memorize the majority of the level to get a high score, and like NiGHTS, its a high score game.

I don’t see what the review means by all too familiar, I’ve never played a third person shooter that has you slaughter fifty or so men as fast as possible and as skilfully to get a high score…

Well, Gears of War is great graphics material, but everything else is just plain repetitive, GoW is like shoot, take cover, shoot again then move on and repeat until infinity.
As a matter of fact, that’s how all third person shooters play…

The GT review comments section are simply surprising, yet again only one or two voices of sanity and then constant Sega bashing over and over again.

I have only played The Club’s demo, but I found it a much more mediocre and forgettable game than Gears of War, which pioneered a bunch of interesting concepts and has pretty much set the benchmark most other FPS\shooter games get compared against these days. Why do you think it is so highly regarded?

The Club seems like a fairly ordinary game, perhaps an okay one, but I don’t think it’s unfair to dismiss it as average.

The Club reminds me a little of Outtrigger on the Dreamcast. Not that I’ve played it yet but judging from videos it does, anyway..

HOLY COW! THIS GAME LOOKS AWESOME!!

I don’t care about what reviewers say as long as the game play’s FUN. GoW was boring, yes. This looks like one of those games that you play 2 months in a row, then get bored, but after 2 weeks you’re playing it again.
Just like fried chicken.

I don’t care if they hate the game. I haven’t even played it. But one thing I can say is that I’ve never seen a combo score based third person shooter before. Never. All the “We’ve seen it all before” comments were pretty annoying. And yeah, I had to do a double take when he said 1993, too. Isn’t that like… when Doom came out? Hell, even Goldeneye didn’t show up until ‘97.

I do generally enjoy Gametrailers reviews. Maybe you lot of hooligans just biased me against them for this game.

Yeah, 1993 had a ton of score based third person shooters according to gametrailers.

I acctually downloaded the demo last night and played it with a friend splitscreen, it was AWESOME! Screw GT. This game is great on multiplayer! Singleplayer DOES feel kinda more of the same after a couple of hours… but every game does that

Suitcase - I agree with you on GoW (I don’t know why so many people hate on the game - I thought it was excellent).

BUT - I would have to say don’t use the Demo of The Club to base your whole opinion of the game.
The Demo is missing something. It shows you how to play the game… but when you actually get your hands on the full version it’s just fantastic.

A very unique game.

More like TEARS of War, did you see dat commercial wid dat little bitch cryin’?

I played a demo not too long ago, and I honestly loved it, but I don’t thin it would keep my interest too long.

The Club sucks, it’s a totally average everyday game. The demo sucked, and yes it is old. A third person shooter where I have to keep my score going…. Like any arcade first person shooter but now in third person, maybe I saw that back in 93. Hahaha

The Club Sucks

The Club is great, I don’t really see were you saw this type of game in 1993, I do not see a similar scoring system back then, and certainly didn’t see any arcade shooter that offered any kind of freedom in movement. Nothing back in 1993 at least.

There’s this Spanish game ‘Caraíbas’ that takes place in Vietnam, but it isn’t really that great…
