Sonic Chronicles new preview

CVG have a new preview of the up coming Sonic RPG for the Nintendo DS, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood developed by RPG veterans Bioware. From the sounds of the preview the game is coming along nicely.

Entering Chronicles for the first time you’re struck by two things: stunning hand-drawn backgrounds and an overwhelming sense of Sonic-ness. It may not be labelled as such, but this is Green Hill Zone. The chequered rock, the palm trees, the giant loop-the-loop rising from the ground like a bendy Ayers Rock. It’s as if someone booted up the original Mega Drive Sonics and saw not ‘levels’ to be played, but ‘locations’ that the characters would be happily living in if they weren’t fighting off Robotnik every bleedin’ hour of the day.

It seems Bioware and doing a great job of bringing the Sonic series back to its roots, if what I’m reading in this preview is correct Sonic will have attitude again, the story will be worth giving a crap about again, the characters will have soul and personality again and this time the script wont be corny enough to make even the Power Rangers gag in disgust… Almost broke into a full on rant just then, that was close!

Perhaps most impressive is how Bioware have tackled the major Sonic hurdle - narrative. Usually comprised of inane skater speak that makes Hollyoaks look like Shakespeare, stories and character work haven’t been Sonic’s strongpoint.

and a bit more,

Just 15 minutes of play saw Sonic consider leaving Knuckles to rot - a choice on the conversation tree that can’t, sadly, be acted out - and a bizarrely adult moment in which prim Amy says to mammalian slattern Rouge the Bat,

“You’re a tramp!”. Read the full article here!

Don’t get your hopes up for an RPG similar to Shadow the Hedgehog but with gameplay about as fun as Big the Cat’s.

As someone who enjoys the more admittedly average Sonic games (Riders, etc. etc.), this is probably going to blow my head off from sheer enjoyment.

Big The Cat is a good character!

Blaze The Cat is shit. Silver is not good. Shadow is worst than all!

Big The Cat is awesome no argument, back in the day when I was playing SA1 and when a non gamer would be walking by they would stop and see Big fishing cause it just looks alot of fun (to some people atleast).

Nonetheless the character just doesn’t belong in a Sonic game, he should’ve just gotten his own game.

What a dumb image caption; good Sonic games have existed since Sonic 1… and, yes fanboys, they have existed after that too.

    A SENSIBLE OPINION? REALLY!

PS: Sonic RPG is looking great.

Skies of Arcadia’s battle system somehow ept me interested with its full amount of back and fourth control and in battle weapon changing.

Im not a fan of traditional RPGs but that was one I liked.

If they can make the game’s battle system atleast close to that of Skies of Arcadia then I’ll enjoy it enough.
Though I play Sonic games for the fast paced stuff, not the story.
So I’ll have to try it.

Though if Bioware is really doing a good job with the story, then we all know who Sega needs to write the next story for all the Sonic games.
Really, the corny crap is only fun for the first few playthroughs, then its just embaressing.
