If you tuned in last week to our post hardware edition article, you already know the drill. We each pick a game that we think should be continued on a next-gen system, you berate us for our picks, our feelings are hurt and you die later in the day in a fiery car crash - fun for everyone!

The rules are the game has to be a new series introduced in that specific era , which in this article is the Dreamcast era and published by Sega.

ryantoycommander.jpg

Toy Commander is one hell of an underrated experience, let me tell you why. The game revolves around a kid know by the toys as ‘Toy Commander‘. This boy gets a new set of toys toys for Christmas, army toys, race cars and other awesome things. Unfortunately he forgets about his older childhood toys that he has now grown out of. These older toys are having none of it and rebel, trying to destroy all of the newer toys, you will take control of the new toys.At the start of the game you see the boy running down the stairs of his home holding a plane making ‘plane noises’ with his mouth, slowly he fades out so the plane is flying on its own, this shows that the whole game is really just the kids imagination.

toycomm.jpg

The game takes place in a normal western style house, each room of the house represents a level in the game and each level has a range of missions and a boss battle. When you beat the boss of each stage it will join you in your fight against the other toys… you do this in every room until you get to the boss of the game which happens to be the forgotten childhood teddy bear!

Some of the missions were really inventive, using a selection of toys which are usually vehicles like planes, helicopters, racing cars and arm trucks of some kind you would need to do all kinds of wacky missions for example the first missions take place in the kitchen level where you need to roll some eggs into a pot of boiling water to make some yummy eggs, pick up some sugar lumps and air lift them into a cup of coffee and that’s just the start of it. These are the kind of things that you could imagine a child doing when playing with toys and it really makes the game magic.

toycomm3.jpg

The game is mad fun, totally awesome and brimming with potential, why this game has been forgotten is a mystery but I would love to see a sequel one day! It NEEDS one! No Cliche the developers closed their doors but Sega still owns the franchise so a sequels is not out of the question, or is it… this is Sega after all. I’m now a Sumo Digital fan boy so I charge them with the development!

I think the best way to show you this game would be a video because pictures just don’t cut it

At the time of it’s release Sega’s last home console was a lot of things- Functional, attractive, intelligent, powerful, and sophisticated. Above all else though, the Dreamcast was a platform of innovation. Keeping these facts in mind, could I have chosen a better game for our Dreamcast IP Revival article? I think not, as Jet Grind Radio is the pinnacle of Sega’s devotion to all those traits that made the Dreamcast so unique in the gaming world.

With it’s simplistic story Jet Grind Radio facilitated an action-based style of play, in which young, hipster skaters rebelled against the ruthless and tyrannical foes of government and mass-media, by tagging and grinding all over the otherwise pristine city, while tuning in to the soundtrack of Professor K’s subversive radio broadcasts.

jetsetradio1.jpg

The game featured an excellent control scheme in which players recklessly grind handrails and concrete, and manage outlandish acrobatics through the streets of the city known as Tokyo-to. When not smashing through fruit stands or doing backflips from building-tops, players would spray-paint graffiti onto walls using smooth strokes of the analog stick. The most incredible aspect of the game, however, was most-definitely its presentation.

Sega arguably created an entirely new graphical style with Jet Grind Radio. Calling it “Cel-shading,” the style evokes the look of two-dimensional cartoon graphics, while still maintaining a three-dimensional world. It was ground-breaking, and it got people’s attention.

jetsetradio3.jpg

Couple this with the undeniably memorable soundtrack of urban, dance, hip-hop, rock, and other eclectic beats, and after a few moments with Jet Grind Radio it was clear: There had never before been anything like it.

A sequel of sorts was made years later when Sega went third party, but it was more of a revisit to the original in lieu of a true sequel. Jet Set Radio Future used many of the locales and events of the original, only with a graphical upgrade and some minor modifications.

img_8.jpg

A true sequel to this game would be incredible. With characters from the game appearing in the upcoming Sega Superstars Tennis there has started somewhat of a murmur that we could be expecting a revival. I for one hope wholeheartedly that it happens.

georgeschoice.jpg

Shenmue is Yu Suzuki’s masterpiece come to life, lots of money and a lot of effort was put into this series. In the game you play as Ryo Hazuki who’s father is murdered in front of him by a man called Lan Di. Thats when you start your never ending tale (so far) for revenge.

The game had eye popping graphics, snow fell and the city looked alive. The AI for the town people is (yes, still is) the best ever in a video game, other games have brainless charecters that are placed to to add to the scenery (Grand Theft Auto III). While in Shenmue, the AI actually seemed life. People would wake up, go to work and then come back home to sleep. Everyone was voiced and had unique personalities.

shenmue04.jpg

What I loved about Shenmue’s story is that it didn’t move fast in the first game. It had incredible character depth and replability. It was almost impossible for you to experince everything in the game, in the first play through. Most people will possibly never experince the full game.

shenmue02.jpg

This game should be finished, Yu can’t leave us with the cliffhanger. Yu has said the game’s story is already written. I would like Sega to do a Shenmue complete saga that comes with trilogy, all with next gen graphics. Imagine Shenmue with graphics like Virtua Fighter 5? Breathtaking!

gchoicesoa.jpg

Really the choice here was a no brainer for me.  What Sega franchise, made first in the Dreamcast era, do I want to see continued in the future?  Skies of Arcadia sprung straight to my mind.

The game has such gorgeous graphics, seriously some of the best detail you can see in a game at the time - when you look closely at objects, in first person view, you can see just how much effort went into the visuals.

SoA

But it’s not all about visuals the game also has one of the most wonderful soundtracks I have heard in any game.  Plus a fantastic storyline, with a highly imaginative and well thought out universe to place all the action in.  From the word go you are drawn into this magnificent world, with floating islands littering the skies, the only source of land, and flying boats for transport.

I think one of my favourite things about the game was just how much fun it was when you are set free in a ship of your own and you can go off and explore the world, trying to visit as many islands as possible and discover lost treasures and artefacts from generations past.

SoA

Also what impressed me was how diverse the world is, with the very different and unique locations to explore.  There is just so much to go on about with the game I don’t think I can fit it all in here.  So I’m going to take a leaf out of Ryan’s book and show a video.

YouTube Preview Image

There are tons of SoA videos out there, but I just like this one alot.

Anyone who knows me will know that my favourite game of all time is Panzer Dragoon Saga on the Saturn.  Well Skies of Arcadia is quite possibly the only game, and definitely the only RPG, to ever come close to knocking Panzer Dragoon Saga from that throne.

With such a great, original setting for a game, I can easily see more Skies of Arcadia games being made.  It’s not like other games where it would be hard to think up sequels, this is a franchise that just needs to continue!

Although I never got to play it, I’d say Roommania #203. It looked amazing, and at least a localized version would have been nice. You’re basically a ghost haunting a boy’s room, and you have goals, such as getting the boy to playwith his ball, or get a drink of water, and you can control elements of the room in ghost-like fashion to lead to this result. It looked great. Other than that, I think Rez is necessary, Headhunter, an actual Sonic Adventure 3 that fit more tonally than Sonic Heroes. I know I must have more answers as I’ve had countless hours of fun on Dreamcast games, but no others are coming to mind at the moment.

POWER STONE 3. There we go. That title is absolutely necessary, and with Capcom releasing that collection title, and exercising the idea of Rouge being in We Love Golf, there’s maybe a sliver of hope?

Very solid choices. With all those up there my pick would be pretty easy: Space Channel 5: Part 3

SOUP

SOUP: They all already announced that, although technially it’s a rumor…..

I like Daniel’s extra ideas for Dreamcast revivals, but Rez is already getting a sequel (though a DS verision could be fun…). Anyway, I would love to see all of these ideas revived on Wii in a new light (except maybe Shemue, which would be better on the Xbox 360).

Will Saturn and Gesnesis/Mega Drive be next? Ideas for Wii sequels?

What the hell is it with people liking Toy Commander? I have it, it stinks, and I’ll never play it again. It’s just lame on every level.

Your lame on every level, your just sulking because it kicks your ass.

I agree with Ryan. *Fires a pencil at Kogen.

I like to thank Ryan for commenting on Toy Commander, the game deserves a sequel, they’re are a few faults in the gameplay and control at times, but the imagination of being a toy and fighting it out in toy land is excellent.

Shame about the ending though…

Haha, Toy Commander! I played the demo countless times before getting the full game. Speaking of demos, does anyone remember the TC Christmas demo? Gotta love that ending. ;)

I reckon if I could choose 2 games, Toy Commander would have been my 2nd choice. I love that game so damn much. The secret Snail Race ftw!

-And Orta, forget the Christmas Demo - did you ever play the Summer one?! That was great too.
Actually I think I may fire up the old DC just to get back to playing with those toys again… my mum won’t let me flood the kitchen anymore…

*Drops a pencil eraser on Kogens head* Take that :)

Rez is getting a sequel? Are you referring to Rez HD (which I thought was the same game, just enhanced), or something else? If so, please say it’s coming to the Wii. It only makes perfect sense.

If Skies of Arcadia comes back I’m hoping it’s a prequel telling the story of that sailor they keep referencing in the game (forgot his name).

If Shenmue comes back, which it NEEDS to I think it would be best if they throw every chapter in one game or something, I would buy any console at any price to finish the saga.

And, I didn’t know Sega made Toy Commander. I don’t think it was too great, but it was over looked.

This is a pretty good list, even if i wasn’t a huge TC fan. But i’d have to agree with Jet Set Radio making a comeback!

Some games that i wouldnt’ mind seeing sequels:
- Bangaioh
- Hundred Swords
- Time Stalkers
- Segagaga!! (i never played it… but it always sounded like fun)
- beat’em ups like Dynamite Cop, Die Hard or Zombie Revenge

TOY COMMANDER

If TOY COMMANDER makes a return, i hope it innovates in some way… like creating your levels and stages and doing things relatively related to that upcoming ps3 game “LITTLE BIG PLANET.” (not copy but some gameplay elements can be used as “inspiration”. Imagine LITTLE BIG PLANET MEETS TOY COMMANDER’s universe? THAT WOULD BE SEXY!

Graham, I’m not sure if I have that one. I don’t recall playing it, so it’s likely I don’t have it.

Unfortunately, the only way I could get those Dream On demo discs was with the Spanish DC mag which was sold around my parts (Portugal) for only a few months.

What’s next? Gesnesis or Saturn, perphaps?

CaptainUlt

Posted February 20th, 2008 at 5:39 pm.

I think if there were ever going to be a Shenmue: Complete Trilogy, it would make more sense to put it on the Wii than the 360.

You’d have to completely overhaul the graphics of the first two titles to release it on the 360, and even then, the game would be heavily criticized for its clunky controls. On the Wii, however, people allow more leeway in regards to graphics, and the system is suffering from a dire lack of good adventure games. Plus the remote could be kinda fun for some of the minigames.

1-Shenmue
2-Jet Grind Radio

Suggestions:

Shenmue Wii make (like Okami Wii, it is not time consuming & expensive)

or Shenmue Complete X360/PS3 (If they are going to use VF5’s tech this will become a killer!)

Jet Set Radio Wiii(Fun gameplay)

CaptainUlt

TimeStalkers is the worst dissapointment ever - simply because it is the “more or less” sequel to the best Action-RPG ever. If you do a genesis edition and miss Landstalker I will go out and personally spank all of you :P

From my point of view they should bring back Shenmue as online dlc episodes, similar to Sam & Max, the Half-Life 2 follow up or the upcomming American McGee game. That way they could sell the old game and if it does well finance the 3rd part with that.

Now I bet a lot of you will complain that episodic content sucks as you have to wait soooooo long for the next episode. But IMHO that is the most stupid argument I’ve ever heard - the sole advantage of episodic content is that it gives you the choice to wait for the whole game or play it in periodic chunks.

All in all, I want more episodic content on XBL and PSN.

Shenmue on Wii? NO WAY!!!!!!!
The best videogaming experience on the crappiest console ever?

I agree with George, Shenmue need the first two remakes with next gen graphics (VF5 or Yakuza 3).
But I think, to include all the story, only one game isn’t enought, at least we need also Shenmue 4, and I’m sure that if Sega can make Shenmue trilogy on 360/Ps3, it wouldn’t be a problem.

Skies of Arcadia 2 also on 360 and PS3, imagine the great worlds powered by the next gen consoles… ;)

I would say also Headhunter 3 and Ecco The dolphin ;)

Stop crizciting the Wii for no appearnent reason.

Didn’t V1L3 already tell you why Shemue would work better on the Wii? If you all hate Wii because it’s a Nintendo console…. you have no brains! All of you guys whine about the Wii’s horrible games, cruddy graphics, and de-evolution. YOU’RE MAKING A MOUNTAIN OUT OF A MOLEHILL, FOR SONIC’S SAKE! Stop with the whining, City Hunter and Kogen, just plain stop whining about the Wii and actually play the system!!!

V1L3 and alimn, thanks for giving a Wii sequel of the game listed a chance at least, and using logic about it.

CaptainUlt

CaptainUlt, these guys arent attacking the Wii they just would prefer to see Shenmue on a more powerful console as would I.

It’s nothing to do with hating the Wii or thinking its a bad console I just find that Shenmue pushed the Dreamcast to it’s limits and one think it was known for was amazing graphics and detail for its time.

If Shenmue comes back I want to see it wowing with graphics and detail again and that really isnt possible on the Wii.

Jet Set Radio is far better suited to the Wii.

Ryan

Posted February 21st, 2008 at 1:24 pm.

The Wii can do amazing graphics to the Dreamcast level.

CaptainUlt

Posted February 21st, 2008 at 2:21 pm.

Sure the Wii can do better then the dreamcast, but it’s not as good as Xbox360 and PS3 and I’d like to see Shenmue doing the best graphics that is possible this Gen.

Ryan

Posted February 21st, 2008 at 3:05 pm.

Super Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess’s graphical power come to mind. Not to mention Sonic and the Secret Rings’s CGI (at the beginning).

As V1L3 said, graphics don’t matter, the game does.

CaptainUlt

Why not have a great game and great graphics?!

360/PS3

What!?! you mean to say Pen Pen Tricelon wasn’t on the list >=C

Sam

Posted February 22nd, 2008 at 2:34 am.

Graphics is IMPORTANT, as long it is the gameplay and the soundtrack.

We are waiting for these games for long time (too long), and now I want at least the best tacnology possible this gen for Shenmue 3, Skies of Arcadia 2 and other games.

Jet Set Radio it’s more appropriate for a wii game, as long as a Shining Force 4.

Only a nintendo fan would say “shenmue on Wii”.
Think about it, Xbox (most powerful than Wii from what we’re saying) has received a simple port from Shenmue 2, I have many doubts that wii could handle the Shenmue dreamcas engine…
I theory yes, in theory wii is most powerful than xbox, dreamcast, gamecube, but the reality…

City Hunter

Posted February 22nd, 2008 at 8:28 am.

One more thing, Shenmue has the best combat system so far for a non-fighting game, it is impossible to make with the wiimote.
Or do you mean a shenmue with the smash bros fighting engine?

Please, wii is a good console, but only for certain types of games, for others is a total crap, and Shenmue isn’t a wii game, got it?

City Hunter

Posted February 22nd, 2008 at 8:33 am.

City Hunter… *sigh*. There’s a myriad of control configurations, including using the VC controller. There, problem solved.

In any event, I think Shenmue is better suited for the Wii purely for the audience. The audience of the Dreamcast is much more in line with the Wii (offbeat, interesting, quirky games) than the 360/ps3. Has Sega made anything remotely like Gears of War or Resistance?

You can’t deny the kinds of audiences that flock to certain machines.

As far as I’m concerned, graphics aren’t important because if you’re going to drop $50 on a game, it should be worth playing for more than a few hours. Look at Assassin’s Creed - great graphics, lousy game. But, City Hunter, I’m not the kind of audience that buys any of your arguments, and I suspect huge bulk of Wii purchasers aren’t going to care about graphics because that’s not a priority, either.

To make a longwinded affair to a point - better graphics aren’t going to make a game any better.

This may be all moot, anyway. Sega Sammy is in the red, and just laid off 400 employees. Developing for the Wii by all accounts is cheaper than other systems, so Sega may just very well develop for the most popular system currently available just to make a buck.

Thanks, PSV.

Anyway, what Sega game sequel would you like to see on which platform (and which ones you just don’t want to see a sequel for):

(Post-Sega hardware edition)
GunValkyrie
Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg
Feel the Magic/Rub Rabbits
Comended: Criminal Origins
Full Auto

(Dreamcast edition)
Toy Commander
Jet Grind Radio
Shemnue
Skies of Arcadia

By the way, what editions should be done next? Gesnesis or Saturn, perphaps?

CaptainUlt

Posted February 22nd, 2008 at 3:18 pm.

Sorry PSV, I don’t agree, what’s the point in making a game for Wii if you have to use the standard controller? (Nights Jod included, but now it doen’t matter)

Wii audience is totally opposite of the one of Dreamcast, “quirky” games on dreamcast were Jet Ser Radio and space channel, on Wii are Wiifit and cooking mama…

I don’t see what DC and wii have in common…

Shenmue wasn’t a cheap graphic game, it need a REAL next gen hardware for his detailed world, and Zelda and Mario Galaxy graohics isn’t enough.

It’s true that Sega is almost in rer, but ONLY Sammy and the arcade division, the console division are making a lot of money, so don’t use this to excuse the fatc thet you and CapitanUlt want Sega game on wii…

City Hunter

The people who listed they want Shemue on Wii:

Me
V1L3
PSV
alimm (Only single remake)

CaptainUlt

Posted February 22nd, 2008 at 4:35 pm.

People saying Shenmue should be on the Wii are clearly not focusing on what Shenmue is and just want it for the sake of it being on the Wii. For one you say Super Mario Galaxy has amazing graphics, that is in no doubt, but Shenmue is a totally different ball game.

Have any of you played Shenmue when it was released? The graphics WAS the game, I can remember being blown away by them at the time, it felt like I was in a truly living breathing world. The Wii can handle one and two, no problem, but honestly, Shenmue is not about unique game controls, your all forgetting when Suzuki set out to do Shenmue, he set out to make a new genre “FREE” can the Wii handle the same amount of data the Xbox360 can? No it can’t, with the newer hardware available, we can see before our eyes various puddles grow thanks to the amount of rain, the terrain deform and so on. Shenmue is not a Wii title, and should never be one unless its a collection of the first two, in Shenmue’s case and what Suzuki-san set out to do, hardware does make the difference, and it was quite telling when Suzuki choose the Xbox over the Playstation 2.

There was much more to Shenmue then pretty graphics, go play the game again, it is truly a living world and to expand on that is what should be done, not repeating what has already been done on the Wii. Releasing a collection on the Wii? I have no problem with that, but Shenmue is a graphically and hardware stretching game and the third installment should do what the first and second tried to do.

“I think Shenmue is better suited for the Wii purely for the audience”

There is absolutely no indication that Shenmue would do better on the Wii then the Xbox360 or Playstation 3, none at all.

“Has Sega made anything remotely like Gears of War or Resistance?”

You’ve just forgot one of SEGA’s most successful games this gen, Condemned and its coming sequel. They’ve also got The Club as well as the new Aliens game coming out at the end of this year. Throw in Viking if you want to too, since that’s similar to Heavenly Sword/Kratos button smashing adventure which is a audience on the PS3.

“To make a longwinded affair to a point - better graphics aren’t going to make a game any better”

No, better graphics do make games better, look at RPGs in particular, as well as Jet Set Radio and Okami. Presentation is a key thing in video games and should be held in high regards along with gameplay. Graphics don’t make certain games, but for games like Jet Set Radio, which if it had a realistic style, it wouldn’t be popular at all.

“Developing for the Wii by all accounts is cheaper than other systems, so Sega may just very well develop for the most popular system currently available just to make a buck”

And give up all the revenue on offer on the other consoles? You’ll notice that, yes while Mario & Sonic the most successful title to the company since Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic and the Secret Rings is incredibly successful too, Virtua Fighter 5, Condemned, Sonic the Hedgehog, Chromehounds, Virtua Tennis 3 and Full Auto all have been successful.

Let’s take a break from the debate.

Talk about the listed games (besides Shemue, for a while) and dicuss what you would of the following out of the choices listed (Toy Commander, Jet Set Radio, Skies of Arcadia, Shemue) to get a sequel, and which system it should be on.

CaptainUlt

Toy Commander (Wii)
Jet Set Radio (All platforms)
Skies of Arcadia (Wii)
Shemue (Xbox360/PS3)

GunValkyrie (Xbox360/PS3)
Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg (Wii)
Feel the Magic/Rub Rabbits (Wii)
Comended: Criminal Origins (Xbox360/PS3/PC)
Full Auto (Xbox360/PS3)

Ryan

I think imo it should be this way ;) :

Toy Commander - Wii

The control methods might be fun in each toy and the wiimote aiming will be fun.

Jet Set Radio - Wii

The wii can handle Cell shading rather well. Not cooler then tagging with your wiimote !

Skies of Arcadia 2 - Wii

I would have to go with Wii on this one, mostly cause they got the first one ported. I think there is a bigger Japanese market on Wii. This game would be pretty good for the wii.

Shenmue 3 (or saga) - PS3/360

I already said why.

George

Posted February 22nd, 2008 at 9:28 pm.

Toy Commander (Wii) - it would be perfect to have wiimote controls in this game.

Jet Ser Radio (Wii) - cel shading + wiimote :) but it would be probably a commerical flop

Skies if Arcadia 2 (360/PS3) - Skies was one of the first jrpg to have a very huge and detailed world map, and it has incredible graphics for its time, now SOA2 could be a new standard for modern jrpg.

Making it on Wii will result on a SOA:Legend 1.5 for the graphics (and graphics is IMPORTANT in an RPG), and one more thing, SOA Legend flopped on Gamecube, while 360 is becoming the new gaming platform for the RPG, so…

Better graphics + more possibility of success - wiimote controls (useless in an rpg) + legend flopped on gamecube=why choosing Wii? ;)

Shenmue (360/PS3) - It must be a joke only thinking about this masterpiece on wii with crappy graphics and wiimote…
