Sega series that should be continued (post hardware edition)

It’s been about seven years since Sega bowed out of the hardware races and chose to be a third-party developer/publisher. During that time, Sega has added to its already legendary library of characters and franchises with some that rival those that helped the company initially rise to glory.
Being the sensitive and emotional guys that we are, we’ve recently been reminiscing about our favorite games that Sega has developed or published and should continue since it made that fateful announcement to abandon the Dreamcast and any future hope of a new Sega home console.
Hit the jump to see our choices.

Gunvalkyrie to me is more of an awesome potential than an awesome game, a lot like the Shinobi game on the PlayStation 2, you get an insanely cool character to control but the levels of the game let the whole experience down, Gunvalkyrie is a great example of this. When you get used to the somewhat bad button layout and you can really get a feel for your character the game just becomes so fun to play, blasting around seeing how long you can keep flying, shooting down enemies and zooming around is just too damn fun.

I would love to see Smilebit revisit this game and expand on just about everything in the game. The storyline had lots of potential too, in fact it was a huge shame that they didn’t dig deep with the storyline I wanted to know more about this world they had built up. The controls could have had a much easier lay out too but like I said before it’s the level design that could use work. Imagine the Gunvalkyrie characters and world in a Devil May Cry or Lost Planet type of game play and level design, huge bosses and better use of that sword and fighting people with guns and AI instead of giant bugs. Maybe with vehicles you could use co-op multi player!

Done right this game would be so bad ass, I’m excited just thinking about it!

What can I say about Billy Hatcher? For one, I feel it’s Sonic Team’s only terrific game since Sega went third-party. For another, it’s simply an incredible platformer. With a plucky cast of happy-go-lucky characters, a simplistic plot (evil bird king steals things from good birds and turns birds evil-please save birds), and excellent play-mechanics, Billy Hatcher is a game that deserves to be recognized as one that epitomizes what many fans love about the Sega brand. Simplicity, quality, and character.

You play as Billy Hatcher, a young kid who’s been entrusted with a magical rooster suit, and the fate of the bird kingdom (or something). Using the new suit Billy rolls eggs around intricate and elaborate platforming stages, building the eggs’ power until they hatch, letting loose various creatures. These creatures become Billy’s arsenal against the evil that’s poisoning the land.

I’ve got a feeling this choice is going to be a bit controversial, in that I’ve heard quite a few Sega fans bash this game, but hear me out. The groundwork is all there. Much like the first games Sonic Team created (games we all think of as classics) there would be no need to create anew, or make drastic changes to Billy Hatcher’s plot, the music fits the game’s style, and the play mechanics were nailed tight the first time. All that’s required is an update in visuals, plus fresh new platforming levels, and you’ve got yourself a sequel!

Blue skies, green grass, cute animal friends, interesting gameplay, pouncing on monsters, cameos by Sonic and Nights… What more do you need?”

A game where you take challenges to win a girls heart. What a simple idea for a game. This game was executed in style and quirkiness expected from Sega. Feel the Magic was a Nintendo DS launch game that utilized all the unique features of the DS. Even though its sequal Rub Rabbits was a bit weaker than its earlier edition, it was still a fun play through. I feel that this franchise should have sold more units, but instead there is a lot of people that never heard of the games. Well now you have.

This game utilized all the DS features that I can think of! So I think the Wii is the perfect place for a sequel. It can even utilize its online component to share cloths for your girlfriend, play multiplayer mini games, and download extras straight from the developers. I think United Game Artist can take the series to a new level on the Wii.

Can you imagine all the things you can do to a girl with a wiimote?

Sure, you guys made some good choices, but I think you’ve missed the mark. Clearly the best franchise Sega has created post-Dreamcast is Condemned, and it would be travesty if this great franchise ends with Condemned 2: Bloodshot. This game rattled every gamer down to his soul and proved that games could make gamers, both male and female, wet their pants for far different reasons than Rez’s Trance vibrator.

I remember several times throughout the course of me playing the game where I just had to put the controller down for the night because Condemned was just so damn disturbing. Unraveling the mystery behind what made otherwise normal people go insane and become incredibly violent while also witnessing the changes occurring inside Ethan was so riveting that I just had to keep coming back.

Together with Condemned 2, Monolith Productions and Sega have seemingly improved on what many consider one of the greatest first-person action games this generation. I could wax poetic about this series all day, but I believe my point has been made. If there’s one franchise post-Dreamcast that needs to stay alive, Condemened is it.

Full Auto is quite easily the most enjoyable racing game I have played this generation. To be honest I’m not a massive fan of realistic racing games - for me the only really good realistic racing games I have played are; Sega Rally (Saturn), F1 World Grand Prix (N64/DC), Le Mans 24 Hours (DC), Metropolis Street Racer (DC) and Project Gotham 2 (Xbox), I’m talking ever here and that’s only five games.

Pretty much all other realistic racing games I find far too boring. This is why I enjoy racing games that try to mix things up and give players something that is very unrealistic, like the RUSH games and games like Full Auto.

The great thing about Full Auto is that the game is not just about racing. Recently The Club has received high praise for using combo scoring to mix up the stale shooting genre, well Full Auto did a similar thing when it was released, but never received the same accolades, unfortunately.

Rather than just racing, and shooting your opponents (which is great fun, by the way), players are also challenged to gain the highest scores possible (like The Club), by destroying opponents and as much scenery as possible. The fact that you can destroy pretty much everything, and cause huge explosions, like when blowing up a petrol station, made the races fun and frantic. Plus, the game also has a good variety of different race types and challenges.

I would love to see Sega pursue this franchise some more. I know Full Auto 2 has been made (for the PS3 and PSP), I think some were disappointed that the PS3 version didn’t expand enough on the original, and the PSP version was a bit crappy all round, and a very different game altogether.

But it would be good to see Sega expand upon the original title, with new tracks, vehicles and also perhaps allowing for larger races and battles online. That would be fantastic fun - destroying tracks and arenas online with over 16 players.

Good list, Gun Valkyrie was pretty sweet. I still need to play condemned and Billy Hatcher. I would just put Shinobi/Kunoichi on that list too. It would be cool to see them do something about those drab levels.

Nice Videlectrix picture. I agree fully with the list, but doubt it’ll happen. :/

Condemned is published by SEGA, Warner Brothers owns the franchise, I think. Either them or Monolith.
Really I don’t care much at all about this list of games; although some are certainly good.

WHAT ABOUT SHENMUE 3?

I couldn’t agree less with the list actually. Do you remember Ristar, or Vectorman, the REAL Phantasy Star, Daytona USA, Jet Set Radio, Panzer Dragoon, Shinobi, or the mother ship known as SHENMUE III?
You say we actually NEED crap games like Billy Hatcher to return? You are certainly off of your rocker.
I’m losing faith in my fellow Sega Nerds…

billy hatcher? what demographics would buy that super nintendont(ish) game.. too kiddie and blah.. i enjoy the sexy fun sega (jet set radio, etc) not the billy hatcher’s or the super kiddie sega (alex kidd, sorry just too kiddie for the likes of today)
Shinobi should be on the list as i know alot of non-sega nerds who loved the game but hate sega.
hmm.. oh and shenmue 3 (i guess its post hardware since it was on xbox as a port)
god damn, who cares all i ever cared about w/sega was there dc-era franchises! (genesis too/saturn)

Skies of Arcadia (i know this came out on DC, but it also came out on GC)

Sega Uranus- the list was post-dreamcast, yet nearly every game you listed in your comment was DC or before.
And Joei, that’s fine man! : ) I knew it’d be a controversial choice, and that’s partially why I picked it! I think there are a lot of Sega fans who enjoy that aspect of the company, as well as there are a lot of fans who like the more mature stuff.
For my part, I can appreciate both. And I think our collective choices speak to the diversity of Sega’s intellectual properties.
Thanks for the comments, guys.

Also wanted to mention this: We’ve got more of these types of features coming, where we’ll name some games we think should be continued from other eras in Sega’s history, so look for them!

For people confused, the franchise has to be made during post hardware and can’t be from a existing series before.
So that rules out Skies and Shenmue for now, though we will have more articles.

I definitely loved Feel the Magic and the Rub Rabbits. I wouldn’t mind one more from SEGA/Sonic Team just to prove their craziness.

Hell yeah more Gunvalkyrie - It gave me a Space Harrier meets Starship Troopers (novel) vibe.
Another Billy Hatcher could be cool too, but unlikely since the games market seems to be aimed at the people who want blood, gutz and tittiez in their games. As much as I hate to admit it, it seems like any platformer that isn’t Mario or Ratchet & Clank is essentially obsolete to gamers over 13.
Also, I’d kind of like SEGA to take another stab at Virtua Quest - or rather the idea of a Virtua Fighter adventure game. It would technically be post-DC because it wouldn’t be a VF fighting game. It could be awesome to explore the origins and story of the VF games in a Shenmue-inspired adventure game.
Man I love Virtua Fighter.

For anyone bitching about James’ choice - if he hadn ‘t have chosen Billy Hatcher - I certainly would have!
Full Auto was far from my first choice for this list…. though it is a game franchise I want to see continue.
And yeah, once again, the list was meant to be after Sega dropped the hardware business and went 3rd party only. Otherwise you would have most likely have seen Shenmue, Jet Set etc…

Plus, guys, how interesting of a feature would it have been to just once again talk about Shenmue or any of the other massively popular Sega titles?
We already wrote an article about Sega’s top 10 sequels that need to be made that covered its entire library.

Sega Franchises from the past and present both need revivals.

Agreed, with Phantasy Star, Jet Grind Radio, Vectorman and Ristar. I’d really, really love to see a new Vectorman. I’d like to see more team-ups, like maybe Sega could get the liscense for Smash Bros. and have Super Smash Bros. Sega Legends edition or something. That’d be pretty cool.

I really enjoyed Billy Hatcher. I got it when it first came out but never got around to playing it much because of several other games I got at the same time, then it got lost in the abyss. But I booted it up about a mounth ago and it is somewhat addicting and actually a blast to play, I played though the entire now.
Billy Hatcher is honestly what everyone says they want SEGA to do. Like James said its blue skies and inovative characters. A simple storyline much like thoes from genesis era, a bare bones good guy vs bad guy. It just really is like a old sonic game with large levels that you can go on a concise path to finish or really branch out on. Either ways I draged on alot give this a second chance before writing it off as trash.
Super Monkey ball still has some potential in it. They just need to go back to the root of the first 2 games (the last one was not so hot) and they should have a good game on their hands.

Thanks, Kokomenda. Same here.
My indvaul opinons:
GunValyrike: Good. I would love to see a sequel with more story elements and worked controls. Espically on the Xbox 360 / PS3.
Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg: Yes. I loved the GCN game, and it really had a Sonic Team feel. I would love to see a rerelease on Wii (what?) with bonus features like you said, and maybe a few new Multiplayer modes and a Sega-based level. And it could have neat Wii controls (Nunchuk moves the egg, A does jumping, B performs the dash attack or alternative shaking the Wiimote. The Egg Driver is performing by the B button, while the Egg Bounce is done by tapping the A button again. And the Z button does hatching, and the power-ups are marked to the Control Pad. Pretty simple)
Feel the Magic/Rub Rabbits: Definlty. Although I’m usually against more mini-games on Wii, it’s freakin’ Feel the Magic. Actually, I think their working on a Wii sequel. I bet around Summer it’ll be announced.
Comended: Yes. I would actually like a PSP port, with the features not getting messed up. Long live the spirit sequel to House of the Dead - kind of…
Full Auto: If it’s not screwed, count me up. Full Auto 3 for Xbox 360 and PS3. I’m actually getting a feeling about it being announced…
That’s my 2 cents. Feel free to dicuss and argue (NOT FLAME!)
Also, for the next subject on Sega revivals…. how about some franchises that could be redone on Wii. Before you pelt tomatoes at me, think about it, and don’t think about the Nintendo hate. Think about done right sequels to Sega games retro and new. After all, I heard your Dreamcast saying nice things to your Wii last night…

Actually, I did read it, but what I forgot to mention was that these IPs… while not necessarily bad, are just a waste in my honest opinion. Okay, Feel The Magic XY/XX, and some others deserve to become a franchise, but these IPs aren’t even half as deserving as the ones I mentioned, and they are just for the most part generic and uncreative…
To top it off you didn’t even mention Super Monkey Ball! That’s Sega’s best new-er IP if you ask me.

“but these IPs aren’t even half as deserving as the ones I mentioned, and they are just for the most part generic and uncreative…”
That’s your opinion, I feel Feel the GunValkyrie, Feel the Magic and Billy Hatcher has a wealth of character in each of those games,
“To top it off you didn’t even mention Super Monkey Ball! That’s Sega’s best new-er IP if you ask me”
Monkey Ball is a SEGA IP that IS being continued, this article is about IPs SEGA have made post Dreamcast that deserve a second chance.

Why include FULL AUTO(especially this one, you guys hate ETERNAL CHAMPIONS yet love this unfinished peice of crap?!) and CONDEMNED in this list? Its still new and hasn’t been starved of a follow up like the rest of the games on the list. BILLY HATCHER has had several mobile games released in japan for a while now, so he isn’t dead(though he should be.)

Sega Uranus and ROJM, We all got one game to choose. It isn’t the definitive opinion of the Sega nerds site.
Honestly I’d say no one here fully agrees with the list… I know I don’t.
Full Auto? Billy Hatcher? just no… (sorry guys! ;p)
