Gorgeous Sonic figures inspire desire, obsession
Posted by Nathan. Filed under Nathan, News, Sonic.

First 4 Figures announced Tuesday that it reached an agreement with Jetix Consumer Products for the rights to make vinyl figures and statues of the classic versions of Sonic the Hedgehog characters.
The first wave of figures will be previewed at the upcoming Nuremberg and New York Toy Fairs, with an anticipated release of July 2008. The first wave will feature Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, with each figure standing about 4 to 5 inches tall. You can view preview images of all three figures at First 4 Figures’ web site.
No word yet on a price range for these collectibles, but they look absolutely stunning. Put me down for five of each.

Man these look fantastic. The knuckles one seems a little worse in quality than the genuinely adorable sonic and tails sculpts but I suspect its missing its finishing touches.

hah! These are great! My only request is that they make one with Sonic’s feet in a Mobius Strip ^_^

Knux looks badass, Sonic looks like he should, and Tails is adorable.
I’ll take 8. Sega, use these designs

These are amazing. I’ll pay whatever I have to to get a set.
I think the Knuckles one is my favorite, and probably going to be my first buy.
Back when Resarus launched the GOOD Sonic Adventure figures (the ones that came out when the game launched, not the crappy ones that later got rebranded as Sonic X figures) I was able to snatch up a Sonic and Tails, but Knuckles sold out quickly everywhere. It was so sweet looking too.
Almost 10 years later and I get another shot. This time I’ve got to get the whole set.

I really hope this means that SEGA intends to redesign Sonic and crew back to their classic forms. I prefer the cute, minimalist retro character design of the Genesis era. Hell, you might get better results applying some of the new characters to the same style.
Nah… we’re stuck with the Adventure/Sonic X/Heroes/Riders/Next-Gen design forever. This means an eternity of generic Uekawa furries with colored irises, bold black outlines, excess markings, and loads of other excess features that came straight from various DeviantArt fan characters.
I’ll buy the figures; their classic appeal alone is far more enticing than anything Sonic Team has produced with the Sonic brand in the past eight years. There, I said it.

I want. I want them all. There’s a spot on my shelf that looks desperately naked right now, this must be the answer.

Thanks for the obvious, Machenstein!
I’ll probably buy the set too if it’s reasonably priced.

The proportions seem off to me. Knuckles just looks off, standing upright and seeming much taller than Sonic. Sonic and Tails look more in proportion with one another… although… I don’t actually recall Sonic ever being that short to begin with, even in his classic form. Perhaps its only the way the images were taken, though–if all three were in one shot it might not look so strange to me.

Knuckles only looks different because he’s standing straight up. Tails is leaning, and Sonic is in mid run with his legs far in front and behind him. They look proportional otherwise.

Finally, Classic Sonic stuff. I miss this kind of stuff; it’s much better than the new gay-looking “modern” Sonic.

I really like them, though I’m a little worried about Sonic’s… how do you call them, “support points”? The union between the figure and the stand, the area seems too small in Sonic’s figure, but alright for Tails and Knux.
On the other hand, I don’t get why everyone hates Uekawa’s design. It isn’t generic, and the “furryness” everyone associates it with probably began with deviantART, not the other way around.
I’d really like some figures in that style, with the same quality of these.

Yeah Uekawa’s designs weren’t furry at all. Plus they were super unique for the time.

Does anyone see how much power classic Sonic has? The new Sonic can’t even spark interest in the games, yet classic Sonic already has people flocking over to these figurines. It’s funny.
But now that I think about it, Sonic Team should stay the hell away from classic Sonic until they learn what “the roots” actually mean. Yeah, we’ve seen Green Hill Zone in SEGA Superstars Tennis, but until SEGA can apply that to the main Sonic games, they can keep the new Sonic.
And that means no generic Uekawa furries. Seriously, enough is enough.

I think they are all awsome and I want them badly. Most people are saying Knuckles looks bad but I think they all look perfect!
