Despite abandoning the most crucial feature (online play) that we’ve all come to love about the last several iterations of Phantasy Star, there’s one thing that remains apparent in this first batch of Phantasy Star Portable screens that have been released - Sega knows how to create great looking games.

In this tiny, portable version, Phantasy Star Portable looks pretty darn good on the PSP. However, it appears that such a feat doesn’t come without a cost as it’s clear by the low resolution character models in some screens. But we should keep in mind that we don’t know how far the game is in its development process, so the graphics could look even better by the time PSP is due for release.

Wow, I can’t wait to play local multiplayer with my friends on our PSPs. OH WAIT, THEY DON’T HAVE ANY PSPS AND NEITHER DO I.

Godammit SEGA. :(

I mean I know it makes sense in Japan, and they’re bound to make a kajillion sales but still… damn, SEGA.

Now I need a PSP to get to play this or is it the same storyline as the console version?

No I have not, though I haven’t heard good things, I never watch movies in the cinema anymore.

Shadiwulf, Chris writes for PSP fanboy, so his stealing from himself.

Hah hah, yeah, Shadiwulf, I’m one of a few bloggers at PSP Fanboy and PS3 Fanboy. Aren’t we a great site, though?

yeah :P

I still find it funny that the PSP version looks better then the PS2 version, and it won’t lag because Sonic Team isn’t developing it *shot*

hopefully theres a program for the PSP like there was for the gamecube made unofficially that lets you play LAN games over the internet , that would be how to play PSU over the internet for free.

I think it looks a bit worse, actually, the textures being quite a ways muddier and lower-resolution. Still, though, I’d rather see video of it actually in action than stills.

I believe there’s a program called “Xlink Kai” or some such that allows you to tunnel LAN/adhoc play to the Internet, just as there was one on GCN and even one on Xbox.

Diogo: This is a separate story in the same universe. I assume it’s a side story, specifically. It apparently will center around a new prototype CAST named Vivienne and Helga Neumann, a villain that at this point has only appeared in Sonic Team’s “Shadow of the Arkguard” moving comic series.

The funny thing is, like the DS, the PSP can get away with lower textures because the screen is smaller and has less pixels.

Anyone tried playing the PS2 version of PSU on an HD screen? Yargh.

I was merely expressing my anger and confusion at the lack of an online mode. I mean, hell, I’d even buy a PSP just for the online mode. But no.

Again, I know it makes sense from SEGA’s point of view but I’m still annoyed.

Lololol the PS2 version does not look clear like this version at all

i dont care if its a smaller screen, its more clear then the grainy PS2 version will ever be

What the? That looks like that was taken with a crummy capture card rather than a raw screenshot. I actually own the PS2 version myself and it looks quite a bit better than that–well, being output to a standard CRT TV anyway.
