Rumour: Dreamcast 2 on its way, as Sega file new Dreamcast trademarks?

Well now this is something that hasn’t been heard for a long time, the greatly fabled (but much wanted), Dreamcast 2.
However, there is, apparently, a good reason for why this rumour is being dragged up from the depths of Sega fans tears and broken dreams.
It seems that Sega has recently trademarked the Dreamcast name. Interestingly, the original Dreamcast name is still trademarked, (so we now have two Dreamcasts under trademark). It could be that Sega wish to keep the Dreamcast name under their belt… for whatever reason.
But, various Dreamcast-related accessories have also been trademarked, including items which the original Dreamcast did not use, such as; ‘floor mats’ and ‘flash memory cards.’ The Dreamcast did have ‘floor mats,’ but none were officially made by Sega, which this trademark insinuates.
So what could this all mean? Well Trademork, (a site which watches the trademark office for interesting articles), Xboxertv and Videogamer.com are all speculating that Sega could be on the verge of re-releasing the Dreamcast, maybe as a budget console?
Let’s not get too worked up about this, though. Nothing seems definite, but it sounds like Sega could be up to something here.

As much as I would like this, it is NEVER going to happen. Sega has been busy flushing it’s franchises down the drain and selling Sonic to Nintendo. they are in no position to competitivly enter the hardware market again…at least not in America…maybe a niche arcade machine in Japan or something, but I don’t know…
Don’t get me wrong…I’d love to see a dreamcast 2, but sega doesn’t have the money or the clout.
I’ll tell you what I think. I think Dreamcast games will be out on Virtual Console / Xbox Live / GameTap and Sega wants to maintain copyright in conjunction with that.

I’d fucking kill for a Dreamcast re-release with all the best Dreamcast games back on sale again for hardcore games… Man I would kill for that.
Maybe with improved graphics so it can handle the newer Arcade games Sega are making like 2 Spicy and even Virtua Fighter.

A lot of people seem to be poo-pooing the idea of Sega re-releasing the DreamCast, but it’s not so far-fetched.
Think about it. The DreamCast already has a HUGE library of great games, and they could produce the system for a FRACTION of the cost and make a profit of every system sold, even if it was only $100-$150 (still far cheaper than the Wii).
Add in a few nifty novelty peripherals and Sega could make a nice tidy profit off a dirt-cheap console. And if the Wii has proven anything, it’s that casual gamers don’t care about graphics. Ironically, the DreamCast could end up taking over from the console that originally killed it - the PS2.

Sega is probably going to make those belts that kids wear of NES controller to show that they know a thing or two about fashion, they are retro, and a gamer (that plays Mario)

Dreamcast games will see a re-release in some form some day, maybe on Xbox Live, maybe on an improved version of the DC (DVD functionality) for the casual gamer… This rumor is still heart-warming, as thin as it is… And if it turns true, don’t forget to bring back Scud Race and Daytona 2 Sega!

I strongly doubt that sega will produce ANY hardware. My guess is that they just want to keep their hands on the trademark to avoid cheap copies (remember the portable DC on LikSang?). I mean “new” DC games still sell (a bit at least) so there is probably hope for a revival of the “brand” (e.g. for re-release of DC games or remakes of DC games) but not for more I guess.

Yeah I know it’s a pipe-dream, and didn’t expect it to be true (well there’s always hope).
But I think it would be pretty cool if Sega did re-release the Dreamcast, keeping the specs the same (and costs down) - But maybe thowing in a few extras.. like a built in hard drive and Broadband.
And maybe wireless controllers (to keep up the new trend that has kicked in) - And I reckon you could have a decent budget console.
Of course, never happen… until I own Sega (some sort of lottery win is in order). ;)

Oh please, just don’t insist on calling it “Dreamcast 2″. That’s SO Sonyish!
“Sega’s new console on the way?” would make a better title. ;)

How much money does sega make these days? Its now coming up to 6 years since they left the console market with the goal of becoming the number 1 publisher in the world, 6 years later and they have struggled to make it in the top 5. Although they seem to be getting more powerful each year buying up company developers and trying to expand its western portfolio. But how much money have they made and how much revenue income do they have compared to 5 years ago. The more they make nowadays then the more likely these rumours could come true.
