The latest issue of Famitsu showed a preview for a new version of Phantasy Star Universe game, for the PSP, dubbed Phantasy Star Portable. The game will feature an all new story mode, two new characters, and a new multiplayer mode that includes local 4 player co-op. No info if this game will feature a online mode.

The two new characters are:

The game is set to be released in 2008, in Japan. Lets hope we get a world wide announcement, soon, or this game might join many of the Japan-only Phantasy Star games.

Hot Asian girls make me want to buy anything, even though I don’t have a PSP.

It seems like an entirely different game since they’re mentioning 4 players. Though I don’t have a PSP to know if it plays the same as consoles online.

And cover those ladies in hair and you have genuine beavers.

It’s not online, apparently.

I’m not entirely sure I understand why.

Maybe it isn’t online because they are setting out to make a good single-player Phantasy Star game, like back in the day on the SMS and Genesis.

PSO and PSU are fun, but they have absolutely nothing on Phantasy Star 1, 2 and 4. (I’m omitting 3 because I never played it, not because everyone says it sucks). I’d love to see this game become a solid story-driven RPG and have the multiplayer as an extra mode.

I’m all in for having a good single player game, but my only gripe is that the computer teammates don’t go in to attack the swarm of enemies. It’s annoying. Or maybe i’m not playing right… i dunno

I’ve said from the beginning that PSO should have been made portable, either on the DS or the PSP.

This… not quite so excited about. I’ll need some more information before I start preparing to consider thinking about the possibility of getting my hopes up. But either way, it stands to be HUGE in Japan, given how fantatical they are about similar games (Monster Hunter).

This is the deal, Japan doesn’t really play online, all kids get together and play via lan (take Monster Hunter for example).

The game is said to feature 4 player Ad Hoc play, like said and I heard there is a site that will let you (with some computa skilz) connect online with people playing this way.

So we’re getting more of PSU’s distinctly average single player mode and less of the ever-so-slightly-better online mode?

Whoopee.
