Eternal Champions hits the Virtual Console

by Hudson on December 5th, 2007

There are two lies in this title!

Oh, crap! Virtual Console releases this week! Stupid real life obligations, what if I missed something really aweso…. oh, I see.

We regret to inform you that Eternal Champions hit the Virtual Console this week for eight (8) American dollars.  It’s a fighter so utterly mediocre that it’s hard to even talk about without sort of drifting off into… where was I?

 Right, Eternal Champions.

Not just a mediocre game, but a truly mediocre experience, Eternal Champions also played host to some of the most godawful box art this side of… well, anywhere really. Behold the terror… after the break!

Alright, fine, this isn’t the box art for Eternal Champions. I just felt like it’d be cruel to throw you guys into the deep end right off the bat- I thought some simply bad box art would help build up a resistance to a truly awful example. Or something. Alright, ready? One, two…

Three.

I mean, holy crap, people. Where do I start? The angry lion guy? The flying, emaciated stripper?  The  absolutely baffling black dude  in green spandex? And what the hell is going on with the crazy ass glare on his wrist thing?

At least we’ve got sorcerer dude up there on the mountain with his lightsaber-staff… compass? Criminy, I think I’m going to go lie down. Hopefully the box art hasn’t  burned itself into my retinas yet.

I think that’s the black dude from Star Trek.

I thought you SEGA nerds were a bunch of smart guys. I guess I was kinda wrong. Eternal Champions is a great game. I suppose you have to be into real 2-D fighters to understand. I mean, that comment from Kogen really say’s it all by comparing it to Mortal Kombat, (which is by the way a truely bad game). Now I’m not saying it’s the best old-school fighter out there or anything like that, but to call it a Mortal Kombat rip is really just like admiting that you know nothing at all. Now that I know this “Sega Nerds” site is not run by actual nerds (nerds would know better, there smart), I may just have to take my Sega interests elsewhere. R-MAN

Someone’s a fanboy. The game controls like crap, wasn’t popular, sucked when it came out(I had it), and still sucks now. It tried to do the extreme violence thing Mortal Kombat was doing but failed horribly at it. It even has finishing moves with blood everywhere.

I know the first Mortal Kombat game is kind of crappy now, but this doesn’t compare to 2/3 on Genesis.

I had this game, too (I think on Sega CD). It was crap. All it had going for it was that it seemed to have a lot more characters than most fighting games at the time, but they all were terrible. Some of them were also a lot more powerful than others.

“(nerds would know better, there smart)”

Way to go, moron. If you’re going to imply that you’re smarter than everyone here, learn grammar and spelling first.

    R-MAN,

We’re Sega Nerds, yes, but we’re not blind to the crap that Sega’s put out over the years, and we’ll call them out on it.

Eternal Champions is a terrible game and you’d have to really NOT know 2D fighters to not realize that.

Wow, so much Eternal Champion hate. Its nothing like MK except for the location fatalities, it was more of a street fighter cone with an awsome training mode and an insane difficulty. I’ve spent alot of time with this game and the notion that the controls are crappy is just bull. This game is the game that would lead me to my love of fighting games. Its still in my genny after all these year and still enjoy wooping my brother with RAX.

R-MAN, I write on Sega Nerds and I disagree with whats written here, I liked EC and its no WAY as bad as it has been made out here… Still I wouldnt say it’s a great fighter it was good at best.

Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side on the Sega CD how ever was totally badass and if Hudson bad mouths it I’ll drop a clown car on him. ;p

There’s only one game I don’t actively hate on the Sega CD, and it’s sure as hell not Eternal Champions.

Kogen you are a total idiot! You think the game controls like crap because you were one of those Mortal Kombat fans. Man, those people were the worst bunch of clowns back in the old arcade days. While us real gamers were dueling it up on Street Fighter, you guys played MK, a game that required no skill whatsoever. Another thing that makes Kogen and idiot is his pathetic statement on how Eternal Champions “wasn’t popular”. I guess a game has to be popular to be good for this clown.
Now theres this Chris guy claiming to not be blind to the crap Sega put out over the years. I’m pretty sure that for the most part he knows what he’s talking about, I think he’s just one of those guys who overlooked an awesome game, and is now just trying to get a cheap laugh…Oh well. At least there are a couple of true Sega Nerds out there who seem to agree with me. Ryan is also right about Eternal Champions CD being even more badass than the original. That game is twice as good! I have to agree with R-Man, Hudson you’ve not done justice to a classic, I played this game as a kid and really loved it then, I am sure it is quite dated now but you should read

No Hudson, you make us chuckle.. I’ve been around since the beginning of Sega’s greatness, and I’ve played or owned practicly every game on every Sega console. You bad mouthing a GOOD Sega game just because you were probably never any good at it doesn’t give you the right to give it a bad review. Next time do your homework.

Several people have a problem with Hudson’s review, I suggest you take your complaints to the forums so this injustice to a classic can be addressed.

Post with links, so whatever you are saying can be seen as hard facts.

    Good Luck

I can’t believe how angry people are getting over this. Eternal Champions was mediocre at best. Another game trying to capitalize on the shock-value of Mortal Kombat by including gore and fatalities into its gameplay. It was really nothing special. The characters weren’t memorable either.

Hudson never says that the game sucks, he only states that it is MEDIOCRE, which it is. It doesn’t hold up today. Theres a reason games like Eternal Champions faded into obscurity while much better 2D fighters like Street Fighter, King of Fighters and Fatal Fury continued to expand.

He didn’t “badmouth” the game - he stated the truth.

After reading the wikipedia links provided by cube
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_Champions

this game doesn’t seem like a mortal kombat clone from anywhere, it is quite intresting the reviewer should have mentioned the cool use of the inforcer… or whatever that thing was called…

Anyone who thinks Eternal Champions is some kind of rip off or clone is just plain crazy (or possibly too young to even know). This game was way before it’s time. The gameplay has never been copied and is still very unique on it’s own. Button combinations were complex yet very smooth and intuitive. If you and your friends got good at this game it’s pretty much all you would play on your sega from then on. I remember spending countless hours playing with my old friend and we still never saw every fatal ending. The music was outstanding. The graphics were very different from any other fighter out at the time (the box art DOES NOT do this game justice). The gameplay was at the top of all of this. Don’t just say something is crap because it’s 15 years old and you think the screenshots look outdated. This fighter was and still is at the top of it’s game.

I like how we all assume I never played the game before writing about it. I can assure you, the three sentences the article devotes to talking about the actual game would’ve been much more favorable if I hadn’t!

Imagine if I’d gone into detail about the game’s flaws. There might’ve been riots!

If you absolutely, positively need a true top-tier fighter for the Virtual Console, buy Super Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting.

Nobody assumes you never played the game Hudson. We just assume that you played it once, got your butt whooped, and hid in your closet crying. I would really like to know the flaws in Eternal Champions that you speak of, because I think a lot of people are under the impression that you don’t know what your talking about. By the way, dragging Street Fighter into this was lame. People who play SF2 know EC’s greatness. I bet your not even a real fan of the Street Fighter series. I challenge you to give me a list of the five top 2-D fighter of all time (in your opinion, of course). Don’t be scared. R-MAN.
