Mario & Sonic outsells Super Mario Galaxy in UK
Posted by Chris. Filed under Chris, Nintendo Wii. Tagged with Sales Chart.

It looks as if the unholy union of Sega and Nintendo is more successful than even we expected, as we learned that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games had the largest sales week of any Wii title ever in the United Kingdom. Yes, that includes Nintendo’s recently released Super Mario Galaxy.
There are no firm sales numbers as of yet, but we’re quite confident it soundly outsold Alien Syndrome, one of Sega’s latest efforts on the Wii. Although there’s no way of telling if it can sustain its momentum or if Mario & Sonic is selling on name alone right now, we have to admit that we’re still surprised to see how well its being received.

Chris, I said the fastest selling UK!
But considering the UK is the largest game market in Europe, I suppose its the same thing really…kinda.

Kind of surprising, last week Mario and Sonic was something like 12th place in the UK rankings… But I think it may have only been out for about 3 days when those rankings came out.

Whoops, I screwed the pooch on that one. Fixed, though.

This is probably due to Sega always being a bit bigger then Nintendo in Europe… So Sonic still has a high selling power with adults who grew up on Sonic now buying games for their kids.

While in Japan it ranked in a lousy 63k a week? (Nintendo published now less)
I actually like the adverts on the television for the game.

Well I’m glad to see the game getting good sales figures - it is easily the best Olympic games title I have played. Yeah not that hard I know - But it’s also possibly the best sports title I have played. And a cracking multiplayer (pity it’s not online though).
Definitely worth the monies :)

I picked the game up today and am enjoying it so far. It does exactly what it set out to do and it does it well. It was always going to sell well on the crossover alone, but it’s also dragging in the crowd of new gamers who got hooked on Wii Sports. Personally though, I’m a bit disappointed that Mario Galaxy isn’t in the top of the charts as it’s easily the best game I’ve played all year and probably one of the best games Nintendo has ever made.

It’s not really a surprise to me, nor should it be to anyone. Super Mario Galaxy is an incredible game, easily one of the best (if not THE best) on the system, and hardcore gamers are of course going to pick it up rather than the majority of other Wii titles.
But here’s the thing. From most casual gamers/parents/kids (including my 4-year-old son)’s viewpoint:
Super Mario Galaxy - Mario
Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games - Mario AND Sonic
It’s really that simple.
