Ecco Jr. hits the Virtual Console

How awesome? So awesome.
Ecco Jr. hit the Virtual console today for the low low price of $8.
It’s a lot like Ecco the Dolphin, but with a difficulty level appropriate for small children. In addition, terror does not stalk you at every turn while your air supply threateningly drops leaving you no hope of reaching the sweet relief of the surface and its life-giving oxygen.
There’s also a lot more sea horse herding than your standard dolphin game. Which is to say, any.
Add in the fact that Ecco Jr. is already on the Sega Genesis Collection and you’ve got yourself a hard sell for anyone but unwitting parents or the girl that sat next to you in grade school who drew dolphins on her binder and talked about how much she wanted to be a marine biologist.
She loved dolphins so much. Maybe a little too much…

12 opinions for Ecco Jr. hits the Virtual Console

Dolphins are intelligent creatures and are very much able to form acceptable relationships which involve anything two people can do. Fat chicks having sex with them is perfectly fine!
At least this is better than DK Jr. Math, anyway. And still moaning on about a collection that’s not on the Wii? I guess no one should buy the NiGHTS game coming to PS2 either.

The NiGHTS port for the PS2 has significant graphical upgrades, as well as a number of nifty little extras for longtime fans. Ecco Jr., by comparison, is the same game on the Virtual Console as it is on the Sega Genesis Collection, only exorbitantly more expensive.

Oh no, how dare someone of above-average intelligence not recommend a straight emulated version of a Sega Genesis title with no extra features whatsoever for $8 when you can buy a PS2 collection that includes said Sega Genesis title plus 27 others with extra features such as progressive scan and save states and only costs a little over twice what the single game on its own does. Truly, he is an idiot of magnanimous proportions.
The only equivalent situation involving NiGHTS would be if there were a Wii Virtual Console version of NiGHTS that only included half of the first level for $10. Then we probably wouldn’t recommend buying that one compared to the PS2 version.

Gonna have to be a little more specific. In grade school EVERY girl wanted to be a marine biologist.

This is a good reason for Nintendo to vary their prices.
Sure the game will be there forever and theres absolutely no cost to keep it there besides maybe small bits of dollars.
Still, this is a dirty unfair tactic.
Leave the games at an unchangable price so they dont have to be dealt with again and consumers will always pay the highest dollar.
Now if it was cheaper it would sell more and make alot more sense for its actual consumer base.
Even at a hudred points it would still pay back the costs for having it hosted online.
So nintendo just has to keep milking it all for money. Plus I guess they cant change it all now as it would make some poeple angry and want a refund.
Still, for eight bucks I want a High Resolution color manual with extra art and a big article on the games history, from creation to the lost depths of consumers and so on.
Something I was already expecting in the firt place.
Not to mention control editing options and Analog stick support for genesis games.
Nintendo, you lazy lazy money suckers.
Anyway, on other notes.

I think he means the girl that REALLY REALLY liked dolphins. The good looking one that never grew out of it and likes them better than guys….
Damn freaking dolphins >.<

Again, I never said it was a rip off and shadow1w2 is right about fixed prices being bullshite as quality varies from game to game. But the simple fact is you’re always complaining about the games because they’re on the PS2 and this is a Wii game. Not PS2. It doesn’t seem to matter if it’s crap like this or Shinobi III, it’s the same thing just because it’s on that collection. With this logic no one should ever buy a Genesis game that isn’t rare ever again, or if one was ever ported to anything.
In reality a PS2 is about 120 dollars, plus the 15 dollar collection; making Ecco Jr. about 135 dollars. Which is the deal now?

This is not a Wii game. It is a Genesis game that has been made available for two consoles at disparate price points.
If we’re really going to compare the price of playing the game on one console with another, it’s only logical to include the price of both consoles if you insist on including the price of one. Prices aren’t decided in a vacuum, and people shouldn’t make purchasing decisions as if they were.
In reality a Wii is about $250, plus the $8 for the Virtual Console download, making Ecco Jr. roughly $258. Which is the deal now?
Even better, a Wii is about $250, plus $224 to download the same games available on the Sega Genesis Collection, making it a whopping $474. And let’s face it, if Ecco Jr. makes the cut, they all will eventually.
You’re right, Kogen: every game on the collection, good or bad, gets the same treatment when it comes to recommending it for purchase. Clearly you’re passionate enough about certain games that you don’t mind paying the extra fees to play them on the Wii, but people deserve to know when they’re getting the shaft- each and every time.

The point of the VC is for people to just download a few games to go along with their Wii games. Telling someone to avoid the game on the Wii because they can get it on another console is foolish since you’re assuming they have that console. This game isn’t a good example, but another like Shinoni 3 would be. What if they don’t have a PS2/PSP/Genesis but have a Wii? Don’t play it?
You can mention it’s on there, but you shouldn’t tell people to avoid it because of that.

I actually agree with Kogen here. But hasn’t this debate been going on for months with neither side budging? Shouldn’t we lay it to rest and just accept that the other side disagrees already?

Why not just go ahead and review the rest of games on the Sega Genesis Collection now? All of those games have been available for a year in the out-of-print game, after all. If or when a VC version pops up, just refer back to the review and go ahead and attach the usual caveat emptor to the post if it’s that important.
The games themselves should be recommended or not based on their own merits, regardless of exactly how the individual decides to experience it, whether it’s on PlayStation 2, Wii, or hell, even illegally downloaded for a PC emulator for that matter.

Oy, people, “recommendations” as they appear at the end of each Look Back are based strictly on comparative bang for buck. Reading the article itself (whichever one) reveals a treasure trove of information about the game’s actual quality! Remember Shinobi III? It rocked! I said as much in the article about it.
A “not recommended” doesn’t mean a game isn’t fun, and is by no means meant to read like an evaluation of the game itself- that’s what all that text in front of it is for! What it does mean is you’re not getting a good deal.
Besides, they’re just my opinions for goodness’ sakes. It’s not like I speak from some towering golden throne, my utterances immediately engraved in stone as gaming law for all to hear and agree upon.
My throne is sliver!

You could easily just make a conclusion that you shouldn’t grab the game if you already have a PS2 instead of just one/two word(s) at the end though, would cause less of a notion.
