Sega to remake NiGHTS into Dreams… for PS2?
Posted by Graham. Filed under G, News, Sony PlayStation 2.

The news comes from the latest edition of Famitsu magazine. But as I can’t read Japanese, I am having to use IGN as a source of further information:
Wii owners aren’t the only ones being given a chance to enter the dream land of Nightopia. The latest issue of Famitsu reports that Sega is planning a remake of the original Nights: Into Dreams for the PlayStation 2.
This isn’t just a port of the Sega Saturn classic. Visually, Sega is upgrading the visuals to PS2 standards, and even adding 16×9 wide screen support. There’s no mention in Famitsu of new levels, but Sega is adding an illustration gallery and a movie viewer mode.
It seems a tad strange to me that Sega should choose the PS2 to port the game to. When surely many gamers would hope to see a hyped up version for the Xbox 360 or PS3.Â
But I guess since the PS2 has such a huge user base, Sega are no doubt thinking that it will be the best source to get high sales.
Though, personally, I would have loved for Sega to release it for the Wii, along side NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. That would be one great way to show off the franchise. Or at least release a PS2 and Wii version, both systems are close enough (technology wise), and both have a large user-base, that way Sega surely couldn’t lose out.
Anyway, IGN give away further details, about the game’s release:
Sega is releasing the PS2 version of Nights: Into Dreams at a budget 3,800 yen price point. Fans will also be able to select the 4,800 Nightopia Dream Pack, which includes a picture book.
The game is set for Japanese release on 2/21/2008.

This is sweet. But yeah, I’d much rather the game be released alongside the Wii (what NiGHTS fan WON’T have a Wii by then?) or (even better) on the 360 or PS3 as a downloadable title in 720p/1080p.
I wonder if it’ll include the extras from Christmas NiGHTS?

Is this part of teh “SEGA AGES” series, like where they redid Phantasy Star and Panzer Dragoon? If so, those never made it to the US. :(

The Phantasy Star collection never made it here since they didn’t do the third game, I think. They added most of the games in Genesis Collection to show they still cared about it. Panzer Dragoon is already available on XBox.
So since NiGHTS is coming soon, it only makes sense to release this outside Japan. Though when something involves Sonic Team, common sense isn’t always what prevails.

This takes an exclusive away from the Saturn, on the other hand mass consumers will have a chance to see what they could’ve played if they bought a Saturn over PS1, back in the day.

Gamcube > Ps2 = Wii O-o;?
The gamecube was graphicly better last I checked.
Its just lazy devolpers.
Enough of that though.
This sucks.
If they can make an updated port to the PS2, then they can make an updated port to the WiiWare section.
Maybe not a VC port but its certainly doable. Well, with a few space problems.
Still, why not give a Wii Port to all the poeple reserving the Wii game?
Or something else that makes sense.
Seems like they cant make up their mind.
Though I bet its gonna be a Japanese only release anyway.
Well, atleast I already have the old one on my saturn.
Plus theres that homebrew PC port someone is working on xD
I do hope SEGA’s decisions work out for the better though.
I wonder if it’ll include Xmas NiGHTS extras.

Yes George there are more PS2s out there than any other console.
But that, as a reason on it’s own, is stupid - because really by that kind of thinking, there is no reason for developers to make games for any other system, ever.
If Sega really think that it’s the PS2 user base that this will appeal to the most, then I guess there is some logic there. However, surely they should realise thatas the sequel is being produced for the Wii, perhaps Wii owners would also like to try the original out as well.
I’m not saying a PS2 version won’t sell, no doubt it will. But I think in many ways it could make much more sense to put it ALSO on the Wii. Or perhaps save money of development (DVDs, packaging etc…) costs and release it as a download for XBLA.

one of the biggest regrets i ever had was misplacing my freebie of christmas nights way back in the day. i even bought the magazine it came in!
and where’s the love of that? surely that, a holiday themed demo, could fit on the same ps2 disc. if not, than a 2nd disc would be a better addition than a picture book.
and if it was SEGA AGES, then wouldn’t it have said: “Sega Ages Vol. whatever: Nights into Dreams”?

This isn’t a press release, though. It’s just a fair assumption to make as this fits in with other SEGA AGES 2500 releases.

That’s what I think it is too. It might be a mistake to get our hopes up that this will be available anywhere but Japan.

It looks like Sonic Team isn’t dead. Besides Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, and devoloping Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, it seems like Sonic Team is keeping their projects silent. Why can’t the new Samba de Amigo be devoloped for Wii?
Well, it looks like this is a Japan-only release, which seems good for importers. Personally, this seems good to release along Journey of Dreams in December. Also, I’m glad they didn’t make a port of Journey of Dreams for the PS2. I don’t want the Wii compared to the PS2. But away, I have high hopes for Journey of Dreams for Wii and the NiGHTS into Dreams remake for PS2. May NiGHTS have a better future.
Also, will Samba de Amigo or Space Channel 5 get a PS2 port also? I would like to see that..
