Sonic 3D Blast hits the Virtual Console

The horror…

Sonic 3D Blast hit the Virtual Console today for $8. Being the Genesis version of the game, it lacks the mega-awesome special stages that made its Saturn counterpart worth playing. If you like slippery controls and repetitive collection-based gameplay, this one’s for you! Otherwise, stay away.

Far away.

Maybe with a save feature someone, somewhere, might actually beat it?

Because it was too much trouble to add that before. Or even for the Saturn version.

Eh? Are you implying that this game was hard? It’s pretty damn easy.

Oh, and the game isn’t THAT bad. If it wasn’t Sonic and instead some other character, a lot less people would be complaining. It’s essentially a 3D version of Flicky (I’m guessing that’s why there were Flickies in it), which is kind of cool.

With or without Sonic this game is terrible. I’m not saying it’s hard, I’m saying it’s fustrating, unfun, and headache causing. This isn’t exactly how I’d define entertainment.

Glad I own this on the Mega Collection.

Now when Soul Blazer coming out on the VC?

I think segas refusing to port the saturn version.

The game wasnt too bad, I like the origonal flicky game and its isometric.

Ya, the 3D bonus stages were the only reason to really go for it.

Wish they would have celebrated with a record shattering ten VC titles released at once!
Wow, that would be, oh so less annoying than three at a time.
Its so slow, Im starting to care less.

And whats so hard about emulating multiplayer over the net?
    Lazy bastards.

no matter how you feel about 3D blast, it’s still better than SA2, and i’ll stand by that until i’m dead.

    DEAD. boosh!

Yes, shadow1w2, 8-bit and 16-bit emulators can run pretty much any game these days so it takes no effort to get the games running on VC. Emulating newer consoles, however, still requires a lot of ongoing work.

The hard part about multiplayer is that the Wii doesn’t have the online infrastructure that the 360 or PS3 has.

    YES!

Sonic 3D is one of my favourite Sonic games. And I am NOT joking. I do actually love this game.

Speak of repetative and boring Sonic games - yet EVERYONE seems to love Sonic Rush Adventure - which is reeking with those two elements.

Sonic 3D tried to do something a little different. Sure not everyone will like it.
But personally, I thought it was a great break from the side scrolling games, and I’d rather play this than (the overrated) Sonic and Knuckles - which I found to get boring towards the end, and never bothered to finish.

Also the bonus level on the Megadrive (Genesis) version wasn’t that bad. I’m actually not a massive fan of the Half-pipe bonus stages in the Saturn version- I’d done that enough on Sonic 2 (back when that was actually impressive). Again they tried to do something a little different with the bonus stages - the only problem is that they are a little too easy.

Once you get past the first few (piss easy) worlds, the levels start to show more exploration and challenges.

I’m surprised no one has brought up the 1up review…

    Why would anyone? It’s 1up.

Actually I just looked and they said everything about Sonic 3 sucks; this only reinforces the fact people should ignore them.

1up is one of the better sites out there, but their retro stuff is done by a guy who clearly grew up on Nintendo and never gave any real thought to the Sonic series. He’s right not to recommend it, but not for the reasons he gives.

1up are the guys that go “GO FAST SONIC FASTER FASTER FAAASSSTTEEERRRR!” right? No thanks, they clearly have no idea what made Sonic good.

(And yeah, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was the weakest one out of the Mega Drive games, but it still was clearly a good game, just a tad short)

1up, like any other site, is made up of editors, reviewers, and writers, all of whom have varying opinions. No one of them represents the entirety of the organization, just like how Graham giving Sonic Rush Adventure a 4 doesn’t mean all of us here at Sega Nerds think it sucks.

Eh, I know that, but name me one 1up article that indicates anything other then Sonic is about speed speed SPEED, I believe I haven’t quite run into the train of thought that Sonic was about a large number of gameplay elements from them quite yet, unless one guy has been doing all the things Sonic related.

Okay, after checking a few of the articles, yeah my mistake, all scorn shall go to Jeremy.

And thus, the internet was a happy place again.
