Portable Mega drive

Brazilian-based company, Tec Toys, are adding another Sega device to their list, a portable Mega Drive.  Unfortunately not quite as cool as the Nomad- the real handheld Mega Drive, from Sega.

This ‘Portable Mega Drive,’ does not take Mega Drive/Genesis cartridges, instead, like so many other similar handhelds, has several built in games.

Some 20 games to be precise:

  1. Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
  2. Alien Storm
  3. Altered Beast
  4. Arrow Flash
  5. Columns III
  6. Crack Down
  7. Decap Attack
  8. Dr. Robotnik´s Mean Bean Machine
  9. Ecco the Dolphin
  10. Ecco Jr.
  11. E-SWAT: Cyber Police City Under Siege
  12. Flicky
  13. Gain Ground
  14. Golden Axe
  15. Jewel Master
  16. Kid Chameleon
  17. Ristar
  18. Sonic and Knuckles
  19. Shadow Dancer – The Secret of Shinobi
  20. The Revenge of Shinobi

While the device may not be able to play all Mega Drive titles, (that’s the dream), it does have some advantages over the Nomad, like; Less batteries (3 x AAA), a High-def screen (apparently), and A/V inputs so you can link the device up to a television, for that true console feeling.

I have to say, this is quite tempting, just as a cool Sega-related gadget to own, plus I like most of the games in the list.

The device is due for release December 5th, from Tec Toys, for $110 (about £55).

What we need is an SD card reader in one of those.
I wonder if theres a way to hack the storage in those machines?
Id sure love to have something else on it.

How can you have Ecco Jr. but not Ecco 2?
Sonic and Knuckles but not Sonic 3 or 2?

Its an odd grab bag mix.

Plus why cant it look like a genesis controller? :P

110 bucks? Are they out of their mind?! If this was like $20, I’d get this in a heartbeat.

not to mention its blue and looks nothing like a megadrive…. should have tried to copy the design into a handheld ..

110 Bucks is quite fine, if you apply the 8$, Virtua console price tag and multiply it by 20 which equals 160.

So it is very cheap!

I just they would release Dreamcast Model .2

For a little more you have a GP2X or a PSP that have all the megadrive catalogue -.-

Who’d pay that to play games built to play on a TV screen on a tiny, shitty looking handheld with weird games and a bad button layout? At least with VC you’re playing it on a regular display, with a good controller, and you get to pick what you want so you’re not stuck with stuff like Alex Kidd in the Enchanced Castle and Ecco Jr.

We have exactly the same product distributed in France: http://videojet-jeux.fr/megadrive.htm

Kogen: Who? Lower middle-class Brazilians. Why? Well, a Wii costs around US$800 in Brazil (US$110 for new games).

(Importing is not an answer: add shipping costs plus 60% import tax - over item price + shipping, plus around 18% of sales tax over all this. Not so cheap either).

Brazil is tax hell.

I’d say the only games on this collection I’d really play regularly are Columns, Mean Bean, Gain Ground, Kid Chameleon, Ristar, and Sonic and Knuckles. That’s 6 games, at about $18 each. For me, not worth it, especially because of Sega Genesis Collection and Sonic Mega Collection. Though in Brazil, I can see where the appeal might be. It’s a good idea, at the very least.

A bit pricey, but I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t want one…

On the contrary and to correct what was said in the article above, the Nomad did have an A/V output (although proprietary) to hook it up to a TV.
