Viking: Battle of Asgard trailer

Sega has finally released the trailer for Viking: Battle of Asgard. After all the gory details, its refreshing to see the game actually running. I didn’t know what to think of the screenshots. I think the game looks pretty good running, but I have some concerns.
The game looks sharp for the most part and if it delivers in all its past promises, will be a classic.

Man, I think this game looks damn cool. Kind of like Spartan: Total Warrior, (very under rated game, imo) but meaner and more badass! But thats probably because its made by the same people - they know how to make games with large battles in. :)

What a shameless cash in on the success of God of War. Here’s hoping for some actual none button mashing gameplay and originality though.

Nah, this is the spiritual successor to Spartan: Total Warrior.
And if you read up on the game, it isn’t anything like God of War, its more based on strategy on you leading and building your army and attacking various enemy bases and the game has one overworld, instead of a linear design, so I wouldn’t be that wary of it being a God of War clone if they do stick to their word.

You do realise God of War is a shameless cash in on Devil May Cry, right? Though I suppose no one is allowed to make action/puzzle fighting games because Capcom did.
Plus this isn’t even like those games as it has an explorable world and allied soldiers. Retard.

I agree with what you said Kogen but you can make your point with out saying ‘retard’ Stop scaring away our members kogen!

Oh kogen, do you honestly think this game were ever to be made if not for God Of War? People in this country went ape shit for Kratos and his mythological blood splattering hardcore edge, not Dante(though it sold well enough). God of War is not a cash in on Devil May Cry, not by a long shot. I’m not giving God of War the credit of originality, merely of record breaking popularity that’s going to leave us with clones for years to come.
I’ll keep an open mind but after watching the video, it still looks like it brings very little new to the table. Don’t pretend to know more about the game based on fluff developers have fed you.

It’s a game about a hero that walks around killing enemies with allied soldiers in a simulated world, focusing on large battles and not duels generally. This isn’t God of War. And SCEA weren’t the first people to use mythologly in a game. You’re just being an idiot - this genre has been around forever and undead/mythical creatures have been in games long before the PS2 even existed. Considering I thought Spartan was a good game(as did many reviewers), I see no reason why this at the very least shouldn’t be a good game. I honestly expect it to be better now since the last was their first game on running on a PS2 engine.

Calm down. You’re honestly telling me you watch the video without noticing a single blatant similarity in tone, game play, or even the narrative? You watch the scene where the hero jumps on the huge guy’s back and starts to stab, and think, “this is awesome and fresh”? You have no idea what the depth of the allied soldiers or the strategic elements are. All you have are articles telling you about how great all that jazz is going to be. My impressions (admittedly shallow) are fashioned after this video alone. Also God of War had very little to do with duels and more to do with killing armies of grunts. Unless you’re somehow referring to boss battles?
This game could be good. I never said otherwise and am willing to listen to your opinion and discuss. But please, back up your arguments with conviction, not insults. Those actually do nothing to convince me of anything. Although I suppose they could be intended for the other members? Perhaps to demonstrate how serious Kogen is about this game? I have no idea.

All gameplay differences aside, God of War is Greek Mythology and Viking is Norse.

I’m not sure which God of War title you’ve played, but the two I own focus on small battles with a few soldiers like a regular beat’em type game; not armies(which this game has). And yes, I was referring to bosses when I said duels.
I’m not mad or particularly enthralled by this game, but you’re just randomly dismissing it as a God of War clone when it’s only slightly similar. Yes it’s going to share a few things with God of War, but so did God of War with other games, and so did those other games. It’s not a valid reason to say the game is a “shameless cash in”.
When Sonic collected 100 rings or got star power, did anyone bitch then and say it’d be a bad game?

The disagreement here then is that I think it’s more than slightly similar. I wasn’t so ready to dismiss this game as a cash in until I saw the video.

Considering the game is being made by the people behind Spartan: Total Warrior (and all Total war games) - and the video of the battles looks kind of similar to that of Spartan: TW.
I think we can expect the game to be more like that, not God of War.
Spartan: Total Warrior, had you playing a single Spartan, who works his way up to command large squads/small armies of Spartans. The game featured mythological creatures and references, like Medusa.
This game looks to be a lot like that, rising up to command large forces into battle, and featuring mythological beasts.
Yeah, I can see how people will think its a major rip-off of God of War, and Creative Assembly probably realised that people may like another Mythological-type game after the success of GoW.
But Spartan came out long before GoW, as I say, Viking looks more like Spartan.

Actually God of War came out first, but the game was obviously into development at the same time. It’s like calling Fatal Fury a Street Fighter 2 ripoff.

Actually, I’m pretty sure Devil May Cry outsold God of War…
