Sega cut down 360 PSU expansion

by Graham on October 29th, 2007

PSU

It seems Sega will be releasing a stripped down version of PSU: Ambition of Illuminus for the Xbox 360, while the PC and PS2 will be receiving the full version.

The Xbox 360 version, it seems, will no longer feature an offline, single player mode, and will only contain the online portion of the game.

PSU

For some people, this will not be a big deal, eversince PSU is designed to be an online game first and foremost, and the offline modes are really just an added bonus.  However, I’m sure many Xbox 360 owners will be fairly annoyed by this news.  I, for one, am not a big fan of PSUs online play, but I actually really enjoyed the single player, offline part of the game.

Sega have not specified why the Xbox 360 no longer has the single player story, but it could be something to do with the game’s size.  The 360 version is download only, and takes up some 1.75 gigs of harddrive.  If you look at the specs for the PC version, you will see that it requires some 9.0 gigs (!!) of harddrive space.

PSU

I can understand Sega removing the single player, because of space issues, but I would rather they release two versions of the game - one for download only, (as it is now), and one on DVD, with the single player and multiplayer modes.  That way, those that only want it for online play, can buy the download, and those of us who thought PSU’s online sucked, but enjoyed the single player story, can buy the complete version.

7 opinions for Sega cut down 360 PSU expansion

    What?
    That’s kinda unfair…
If that’s the way it’s gonna be I would much rather buy a full game then a stripped down release on Xbox Live.
Here’s hoping Sega’ll change their mind, because I would really like a proper story mode to go with my Xbox 360 copy.

I agree with you, Graham. I would have bought it for the offline content, and then possibly considered going back online with the game.

Do you know if the 360 version will have additional achievements? Original PSU only had offline achievements.

I think it’s important to note that the Xbox 360 version also is half the price of the PC and PlayStation 2 ones.

I was among those who were annoyed by this news, but at the same time it isn’t a huge loss for those of us who are online and therefore have access to the expansion download to begin with: Ambition of the Illuminus’ offline Story Mode is a simply a revamped Episode 2 with new pre-rendered cut scenes and voice acting. The very same Episode 2 (sans those two things) that has been released over the past year in Network Mode for all versions.

I suspect the reason it was cut was in order to meet the *worldwide* November 20 release for the Xbox 360 version. The PC and PlayStation 2 European versions are delayed two months, which presumably has something to do with translating and localizing the content to all those other languages over there.

Personally I wouldn’t mind seeing the new offline portion make its debut on the marketplace as a separate $10~$20 download, but I’m not holding my breath nor losing any sleep over it.

The thing is - having thegame as download-only is annoying for me.

For some reason I only ever seem to have about 1gb of space left on my Harddrive.

I have 1 demo, a few small clips, about 2 cds, and a few XBLA games (most of them demos) - yet that seems to have taken up most of my 20gigs.
So I use my free 1gig to download new demos, play them and delete them.

Even if I wanted to get PSU: AI, I couldn’t.

I just wish Sega would also give us a disc based version. Even if they told us that it would be delayed - and the download version would come first, I could wait.

The offline content is already online, they just added cutscenes and voice acting in the PC/PS2 version, I find very stupid to pay ONLY for the offline content

I think some people myself inclluded had a feelling that AOI would goe the same way as PSO ie that the expansion would allow for the use of your online avatar offline in the story mode.

That would have been the ideal way to appease everyone who already pay 6.99/9.99 to play online but who also feel detached from the game due to their pride and joy (creation of avatar) being exclusively online.

It’s this one thing that tends to stop this game getting the plaudits it truly deserves the extra mode was a waste of time on PSU because what was the point if the stuff you collected of fline could not benefit you online.

I’ve bought the expansion pack and look forward to the any updates but i still cant help feeling that after all ive paid i own nuthin.

The cultivation of your personal avatar off line was the motivation to eventually join your friends online. the decision to do away with this feature has led people to believe that they are being conned out of a great game.

The game looses it’s effectiveness as a personal experience once server maintenance takes place or heaven forbid server cancellation Pso BB but those on blue burst still have the chance to play off line modes for what its worth.

Exclusive online avatars was not the way to go. online content maybe but your avatar should be yours and your hard drives to play when you want.
