Phantasy Star Universe expansion details released

by Nathan on October 26th, 2007

Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus

It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for! Phantasy Star Universe expansion pack Ambition of the Illuminus has finally been dated for America and Europe.

For PC and PlayStation 2, the game will be available on Nov. 20 in North America, and Jan. 25 2008 in Europe, at around $40 USD. The coolest news is the expansion won’t even require the original PSU game, so those interested that don’t want to buy two separate games can immediately jump in to the new content!

For Xbox 360, the game will be available as an Xbox Live download only on Nov. 20 in North America and Europe, for 1600 points ($20). 1.75 GB of hard drive space and the original PSU disk are required.

The expansion boasts expanded character customization, new lobbies and a casino, new weapons and types, new combat abilities and increased class level caps, and new missions and enemies. Quite the robust package!

You can pre-order AotI at most major game retailers. If you missed out on the PSU action previously and want to get a head start now, the PC version is only $10 at Amazon.

While I stopped playing PSU in February and had many complaints with the game, Sega has actually fixed most of the issues in my absence. I have recently returned to PSU thanks to some online friends, and I’m having a blast yet again. I’m definitely looking forward to the expansion come November!

Unless the population increases in both quantity and quality due to this, I’m not interested.

Yes, I too base all my game purchasing decisions on the quality of its pubbies.

    Oh wait, I have friends.

You probably mention the 1UP Platinum Cup event that’s going on right now leading up to the expansion. 250% EXP, 120% drop rates during the regular missions, and if you do well enough, weakened monsters and 500% drop rates in the bonus mission! The missions themselves have a variety of puzzles and challenges in them.

Just because my friends quite rightly recognise Phantasy Star Universe as a pile of shit, and as such stay the hell away from it, doesn’t mean I don’t have friends at all.

[Insert paragraph how Phantasy Star Online was much better here]

And I’d have thought the online community was quite important when it comes to a game that revolves around it. Or maybe I’m just being silly?

I know enough people so that I never have to play with pubbies, in any online game I buy.

And would someone please explain to me why PSO is so much better than PSU? PSU is pretty much the superior game in every single aspect and the only reason anybody bitches about it is because they can’t take off their rose-tinted glasses and look at the game objectively.

Nathan, what platform are you playing on? I’m cosidering going back to PSU. I didn’t quit because of the game, I quit because of the time it was taking up.

Also, how long do you have to be away before Sega erases your character? I think I quit quite a while back.

I’m with Saphion here. Personally I think PSO is far superior.

The gameplay was simple, no messing around trying to figure out weapon combos and such. Or working out how to use that stupid robot thing in your room to upgrade weapons, just so they can do an extra 2pts of damage.
The graphics were good for its time - PSU looks like a pile of very wet poo.
The boss battles were amazing - that Dragon blew my mind the first time I did it.

The only thing I like about PSU is the single player story. And I kind of like how the multiplayer continues on, and you can find out some things that happened after the single player ends.

Personally I think Sega shoudl have started afresh, and just put it on the PC and Xbox 360 - so you can actually have good graohics and nice big open landscapes - not the horribly subpar graohics and confined, crappy areas we get now.
OR if they really insist on a PS2 version, make a Wii one too. Personally, if I just have to sit and tap one button all day to attack, I’d rather do the same thing, but waving a wand around. At least then I can pretend to be a Jedi, and get some fun out of it.

That all said… I will still buy the expansion…
