Sega Nerds

Sega to port eight-year-old fishing game to Wii

Remember doing this with an actual fishing controller?

Just thought I’d point out a few of the more hilarious facts about the upcoming Wii rendition of Sega Bass Fishing…

Historically inclined Sega Nerds will recall that when it was released just after the Dreamcast’s launch, Sega Bass Fishing came with a fishing controller that contained much of the same motion-sensing tech as the Wii’s much-vaulted controllers.

The new rendition also looks almost exactly the same as the old one. In other words, it looks like you’d probably have a better time playing Sega Bass Fishing on its native Dreamcast than you would on the Wii.

Or perhaps you’d prefer Hooked! Real Motion Fishing for the Wii, which comes with a controller attachment meant to simulate a rod and reel. It’s from the same team behind Sega Bass Fishing, but isn’t eight years old! Shiny!

In any case, I’d like to take a moment here to predict the impending announcement of Sega Marine Fishing for the Wii roughly a week after Bass Fishing’s release in early 2008. Possibly with exclusive content.

(fingers crossed!)

Still better than a mini-game collection.

“It’s from the same team behind Sega Bass Fishing, but isn’t eight years old!”

But it still looks eight years old.

Amusingly, I think it looks about as good as most other games on the Wii.

Err… but Sega aren’t porting the Dreamcast version across…

The graphics may not be much better, but it’s already been said how the game will have tons more landscapes, varied weather, and different times (day to night) for fishing.
It sounds like a much improved game, imo.

    It’s, uh, still a port.

You make it sound like a direct Dreamcast port, when it’s clearly not!
It contains the same stages from the arcade and Dreamcast, true.

But the game now features more stages, more fish, the weather, the time of day, being able to steer your boat, plus some other new modes.

You commment on how the game is eight years old… well the idea may be (actually the idea is much older) But this version sounds to me as though Sega are putting the effort in, and we are not just going to be playing through the Dreamcast classic once again.

Have you even seen a screenshot of the original SBF recently? This is clearly not a direct port, but technicilly the third installment (marine fishing was a spin off).

There was also Sega Bass Fishing 2 on DC that had the ability to steer the boat, night/day, weather, etc. It seems like this one is more of a port of that game than the original.

    Like I said before…

I have four of the fishing rod controllers for the Dreamcast version.

I highly doubt that using a Wiimote will be as satisfying as hearing the controller go *click click* when you reel in your line. Or maybe they will make the little speaker make the noise. It still won’t be the same though.

This does inspire me to go catch a few virtual fish though.

    Hmm, the resolution looks better.

Didnt know Hooked Reel fishing was by the same team. I’ll have to try it.

It was always fun seeing the fish chance after the hook. But I dunno if Id like the game if it doesnt have Sega Bass fishing’s arcade feel.
    Loved that alot :3

Maybe they’ll make it more than a port later on or something.

    I think you meant vaunted.
