New info on Viking: Battle of Asgard

Gamespy reported back from GC, talking about Sega’s upcoming Viking: Battle of Asgard. First they recapped stuff we already knew, so let’s skip that and get to the impressions and new info!

Gamespy said the game looked”’spectacular,” also mentioning it looks well-polished with good textures and impressive draw distance. Since it’s still pretty early in the game’s development, some clipping and pop-up did happen (which is to be expected).

The world is three huge islands that you can explore at any time. But like Elder Scrolls (at least Morrowind) you have to be careful, since some areas have harder enemies. You will be able to lead armies with you! You will need to have strong armies and war machines to lead sieges on castles. You will also be able to talk to random people and accept missions.

The combat was said to be God of War-like. You will be able to equip magic, like stealth, to sneak up on enemies and so on.

The game’s unique point seems to be the sieges. In the game, sieges (and other battles) are open-ended. You are the leader; you determine victory or defeat. You will have tasks assigned to you during huge sieges to determine victory. Some of these will be fighting bosses, stopping magic spells, or retrieving artifacts that make your enemies respond.

Oh, did I mention that one of Skarin’s powers is to tame dragons that can be used in battle? (In before Panzer Dragoon fanboys gasp.) The dragon can be called out but won’t stay in the battlefield very long, so use him in critical moments.

The game promises 16-20 hours of intense gameplay. Gamespy asked Creative Assembly if any mythological giants will be in the game and their answer was “Yes.”

It sounds to me like it’s GTA meets God of War meets Rune?

After seeing the first screenshots - this instantly became one of my most sought after Sega titles!

I love these types of games. It sound very much like a more involving Morrowind - perhaps less ‘do anything you want’ attitude.

But it sounds and looks awesome to me.

Wow, this sounds awesome.. If they deliver on what they promise this should be one hell of an awesome game.

Wait wait wait, so you can build your army, tame dragons, brutally slaughter the enemy hordes and lead a siege on a castle.

Dare I say it, I’m more excited about this game then NiGHTS even! =0

I’ve always wanted a game that had a decent battle system, which also gave you a great deal of exploration, with sub-missions and you had to rise your army and lead it to war too! this was something I’ve been wanting since Romance of the Three Kingdom and has always been one of my “dream” games.

If they can deliver everything they said they would, this could become one of my favourite games this generation.
