Unlock harder difficulty modes in Alien Syndrome
While we’re still waiting on our Alien Syndrome review copies at Sega Nerds HQ, I’m sure everyone else is having the time of their lives with Sega’s alien shoot ‘em up.
But if you’ve already played and beaten the game and are looking for something else to do, I have some good news for you - by beating the game on a difficulty level, it will unlock the next harder level.
- Unlock Extra Difficulties: Beat the game on the difficulty that corresponds with the unlockable difficulty in order to open it.
- Unlock Expert Difficulty: Beat the game on Hard Difficulty.
- Unlock Hard Difficulty: Beat the game on Normal Difficulty.
I know these are kinda lame considering most games come with these options from the get go, but hey, it’s better than nothing, right? Or is it?

Unless the game is really short, I think most people would ignore that. I know I’d never play through a long rpgish game several times in a row.

If its a really fun game I can happily play through several times.
Halo for example - ok not the longest game ever- but it has 4 or 5 difficulty settings to play through - and Ive done them all - at least twice.
But I have been hearing mixed opinions about this game - some say its actually fun - once you get past the first couple of levels, but others say its just crap…

The more I play it, the more fun it is. I think if you get to keep your experience and equipment, I would go on to the next difficulty level.

The idea of these difficulty modes is that, when you start up Hard mode after beating Normal, your character from Normal still has all the equipment, experience, and skills she had from before. So, the monsters at the start of Hard mode are about the same difficulty as the ones at the end of Normal. It’s not really providing harder ways for the player to go through the game, it’s just elongating the amount of time the player can spend with one character, so you don’t have to keep making new characters every time you start the game. With that in mind, it’s pretty inconceivable for all of these difficulties to be available upfront.

Thanks for the insight Bryan. I was unaware of that feature, which I gotta say is kinda cool.

Well I just beat the game, and Hard Mode is indeed just picking up where Normal Mode left off. All my items, equipment, experience, skills, money, etc. carried over.
The game was really fun to play through the first time. The graphics blow and the story was just hilariously bad, and not on purpose. Still though, shooting up aliens just never got old for me, and the game throws new weapons and stuff at you at appropriate intervals, and the final weapon types are really fun. I’m looking forward to playing through it a second time.
