Bioware talks some more about Sonic RPG

What do you do when your development studio (i.e. Sonic Team) can’t make a good game? You get critically acclaimed studio to give it a shot. Bioware seems to be hyped about working on this RPG. Not only is this their first Sonic game, but its also their first DS title, as well.
Bioware has given very vague details so far, but it has given up some info on what to expect. Apparently, it wants to give the game a rich story that is character driven and has alot of cliff hangers, like an explosive episode of 24, but with Sonic instead of Jack.
All the popular characters will make a grand return. Bioware has said it has its best writers on the project; seems that this wont be a half-ass game, eh? So is this a good move by Sega? Let’s hope! If Mario can do it so can Sonic, but better!

They are gushing about Sonic the Hedgehog because they are being paid. The likelyhood that any of the development team has any affinity for the series is completely nonexistant. They say a “24 like” adventure, but what’s good about that? There’s nothing deep or compelling about 24, it’s just basic entertainment, and most importantly, it doesn’t fit in to the mythos and persona of Sonic the Hedgehog. No details have been given, it’s always the same “We love Sonic the Hedghog, we’ll give him rocket launchers with +5 damage! We have our Sega Genesis plugged in right now!” It’s all bullshit on their part. They are probably the most soulless development team out there, and their games mimic their soulless brand of black and white storytelling coupled with yawn inducing gameplay.
Also, this editorializing by Sega Nerds is completely unprofessional. You’d think there would be more neutrality opposed to simplistic “Biowarez is teh awesome” and “PS3 are teh suck” that you can find on any half-rate blog. Please, take note of it.

RR, you can rest assured that George will be beaten severely for this.

I think that screenshot is hilarious! That hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog and Phantasy Star 2 is great. Who ever made that, kudos. I laughed really hard at that.

Uh oh, I hope we don’t see Rouge saying ‘dirty bastard’ again! I don’t know if I can handle that much extremism after the last time.
ReplicantRedux, do you really think the guy just made up some story about having a signed Genesis and stuff? All I remember him saying is that he played the first 2 games occasionally. Anyone with even the slightest amount of sense knows they’ll be praising the games a lot, since they’re making one.
Also I think this place exists simply to make Sega news easier to find rather than looking through sites like Gamespot and Joystiq. Go there if you want some frat posing, faux-idiot, Madden humping, editors who probably know nothing of Sega because they have a SNES as a third testie.

WTF did I do now?
First time I didn’t make a negative spin on a Sonic Title and I’m going to get yelled at/ Spanked.
God damn it.
Emmett thanks for kudos on the picture, didn’t think anyone was going to notice ;)

To Kogen: I absolutely do believe that they are talking the talk. Scott Steinberg is buddy buddy with Bioware after the failure of an RPG that was Star Wars: Kotor. Scott is simply using Sonic as a tool to launch Bioware further into the mainstream conscience.
And just because this post reeks of unprofessionalism does not mean I enjoy the Madden faction of blog owners who have a SNES as a third testicle. That’s not what I want for Snerds, but I do want some balanced converage. I’m merely one viewer to the blog, so take that for what you will.

redux, you want me to be professional by saying that the only reason the Sonic RPG is happening is because Steinberg wants to launch Bioware into a the mainstream.
Right, KOTOR was a great RPG what was so shit about it? Also, KOTOR sold more and won more awards then sonic games have in the as 3-4 years.

Sonic games sucking havn’t stopped them from selling millions. Unless KOTOR really did sell like over 6 million in the last 4 years.
George

what Sonic game sold 6 million?
Kogen
Jul 18, 2007 at 1:46 pm
Well you said it sold more than Sonic games have in the last 4 years. The “s” on “games” would mean multiple games, not a single one.
And according to the internets, Sonic Heroes sold over 5 million while KOTOR sold over a million.

None, but all of the recent ones combined…
George
Jul 18, 2007 at 1:55 pm
I mean’t in the last four years as in each game individual not combined ;)
I serious can’t believe that Heroes sold a over a million for some reason. but regardless, thats cool I guess….
Bioware games are still higher rated then most studios, TBH ONLY sega fans will whine when a highly criticized studio comes and works to make a game.
Square did Mario RPG and no one complained, Sonic RPG didn’t make Square more mainstream, Final Fantasy 7 did.

I like editorializing. If I want bland posts and dull statements without any sort of emotion, I can find that elsewhere. There’s obviously some editorializing I don’t like (Nathan’s rant about Miyamoto for one) but that’s how things are supposed to be. It does more good than it does harm, in my opinion.

I can’t see your problem is ReplicantRedux’s, This post isn’t saying Bioware are awesome at all, George just report what Bioware have said he even finished the post with “So is this a good move by Sega? Let’s hope!” Whats biased about that?
For the most part Bioware make games people like and the PS3 IS the suck and it would be a bad move to keep big games exclusive to PS3. We are just SEGA fans reporting SEGA news and most of us aren’t professional writers. We like to put our opinions out there, If you don’t like it you can go somewhere else.
If anything you are the over opinionated one here and your only in a huff because your opinion differs to ours.

@Bryan
You make a good point, and one thing I think we should continue to be doing is interjecting our opinions into our posts. This isn’t a straight news site like Gamespot or IGN. It’s a blog that focuses on Sega by Sega fans.
And every one knows, Sega fans have their opinions.

“…I really liked Heroes…”
Don’t worry, your not the only one at that, its one of those few games I load up on my PS2 before I have to go to work, I could complete and level in six minutes and be happy. Though I could say a few bad things, it is nice that some levels have a simple pick up and play factor there.
All don’t remind about bingo highway and its bottomless pits, just don’t, oh the painful memories!

Well, Heroes did sell well enough to score Greatest Hits/Platinum Hits/whatever re-releases, if that’s any real indication of how well it did. I doubt somehow that the total sales for it (even with the re-release numbers), combined, approach anywhere near six million, but who knows.
Conspiracy theories about Bioware’s plans for mainstream domination aside, those fellows certainly seem, er… enthusiastic. I’m willing to believe they are Sonic fans and that they do want to make a good product, but unfortunately there wasn’t all that much of any real substance in the interview.

I don’t know, it seems like there really isn’t enough information there to have a good opinion about it, except an opinion of Bioware and trying to guess what this game could be like.
I never would have thought there was enough substance to make an RPG out of Sonic, but then I never would have thought there could be a cartoon either. It’s a really weird concept, but not as weird as Sonic in a foot race against Bowser in Communist China.
I wish they would revisit Panzer Dragoon and make a new RPG of that. I would buy whatever damn system they put that on.

RE: Panzer Dragoon RPG,
I meant if people from the old Team Andromeda or Smilebit were working on it…
Not Bioware.

“The likelyhood that any of the development team has any affinity for the series is completely nonexistant.”
Come on now. They’re a game company. Surely it’s not outrageous to think someone there likes Sonic.
