Actual news about NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams

1up.com recently got a little time with NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. By “time,” we of course do not mean actual time spent playing the game. That sort of nonsense would be absolutely daft so close to the release of the game. No, they got to watch the game being played just like IGN. However, unlike IGN, they managed to weasel out a few new facts about the game from Sega. Some of these facts were worrying, as seen below:
Helen and Will are the two new personalities replacing Eliot and Claris as the humans that transform into the acrobatic Nights, but their role isn’t quite the same as Eliot and Claris’ was. According to a Sega representative, players can control Helen and Will in 3D platforming levels later on in the game, and once players collect blue balls when flying around as Nights, they can use those as projectiles when playing as Helen and Will.
So, uh, there you have it. NiGHTS will feature blue sphere projectiles and 3D platforming segments- apparently not just when you run out of time as NiGHTS and have to get back to said dream guardian as one of the kids, but as levels unto themselves. Totally in keeping with the spirit of the original.
If I see a bottomless pit anywhere in this game I swear…

How dare a developer who usually makes platformers add that to their game, that’s totally unorthodox! I’ve always had a thing for blue spheres myself though, so I’ll think of this in a postive light for the moment.

When did SEGA fans suddenly all become such dramatic moany bitches?
We know nothing of this yet, they might be as little as Fire Flower power in Mario games..
Most people like my self have WANTED some normal platformer levels instead of that rubbish, that bit at the start of the old NiGHTs where you HAVE to be attacked by the enemy was just craptastic

Ryan, 4 months to release and Sega hasn’t even shown a playable built and going to add a plateform staging,
Wasn’t one of the reason Sonic 06 and other sonic games suck cause they tried to do to many things by the time limit?
TBH, I have a feeling this is going to be a 7 out of 10 game, hopefully i’m wrong.

Who said they JUST desided to add this in now? They have probably been planning it from the start.

Sonic Nextgen was started after Sonic Heroes, they had plenty of time and apparently budget. They’re just untalented and stupid.
No one has even seen this yet and really if done good this shouldn’t be bad at all, I’m sure most people who like NiGHTS also like platformers.

whatever, I’m still purchasing the game. It’s one of the main reasons why I bought a Wii.

“When did SEGA fans suddenly all become such dramatic moany bitches?”
When Nintendo fans took the scene and Sega fan grew up to the point of dont caring about keeping them controlled, more or less GameCube era. Everything else is just wanting to have low criteria.
btw. 3d platform with those kids in the original game was crappy and could feel painfully long. There werent much talent or magic spend there. Still, that sentence about 3d platforming in this new game is still very vague; but we are aproaching to a point where any news that make this game different of feeling like a remake is considered by a lot as bad news, and it is getting stupid.
Oh, and Sonic NextGen was developed by a completly different team, in a compltly different continent with no conexion watsover with the team developing this game, and they had to create a completly diffrent engine for next gen consoles. Would be pretty good to give factual evidence about the real start of sonic next gen and read interviews and postmortens.
I dont expect Nights to be considered 7 out of 10, thats pretty optimistic given the linked review nature of internet nowadays. People just doesnt trust Iizuka anymore despite the actual quality this game may have finally. They are thinking abut that score since the very beginning they saw the name IIzuka related to Nights.
Mario is a bee in the new game btw, and that is good. The word Iizuka is the problem here and people do not want anything newer from the original Nights. But still Sega SHOULD NOT listen to Sonic Team fans, most of them are just destructured nintendo fanboys and 15 years old yaoi fans.
Some Sega games (for not saying almost all of them) actually grow on antihype when they aproach launch (till the point of even die in the mind of some), and only some month later begin to appear people that are not ashamed anymore of saying on internet they actually like them. Hell, thirdparty Sega and even the first games for xbox 360 were considered average and see now, with people actually talking good about ChromeHounds.
btw. I am as guilty as the guiltiest one. I didnt like the original Nights when I first saw it; i couldnt understand why Sega in the 32 bit war didnt use their real resources to create a Sonic game (and a good one not the 32x rubbish or that ugly xtreme). There were month between I first played it and I actually realized was what all about. At the beggining it was just a good looking magic game with some flaws, but with the time I realized it was one of the very best arcade game I had ever played. It was actually the epitome of modern arcade gaming. Im not seeing still evidence that those core mechanics are gonna be worse in this new one, so I am actually going to get this game to see if I can repeat that experience. You cant do that from any other overrated “fun” game nowadays.

NiGHTS isn’t a arcade game. BTW I’m pretty sure I heard in a Interview that Sonicteam USA and Sonicteam Japan where working on Sonic 06.

For me it is an arcade game, but maybe we should define early what an arcade game is. But is as arcade as DoDonPachi is. Its actual Time Attack nature make it and arcade game for me without even having any doubt. And a modern one, that is even better.
Sonic Next Gen was a Rd Consumer Develpment #3 endevour; first slighty supervised from the highs by Naka, then by Oba, producer of Shinobi Ps2 and others, albeit the primery producers and responsibles were others. The fact of maybe Sonic Team Usa helping them to reach some kind of coherence (heh) may be the refutable thing.

No, Sonic Team US and Sonic Team (jp) did not work together on Sonic the Hedgehog 06, as far as I know.
Though what did happen with the development with Sonic 06 was that they decided to split the team into two, one developing Sonic 06 for 360 and PeeEss3 and the other developing Sonic and the Secret Rings.
As far as I am aware, Sonic Team USA never touched Sonic the Hedgehog 06

I said they started after Sonic Heroes because the script Sonic Cult had of it used Sonic Heroes models for all the characters, I’ve no idea how much was even done at that point, but it obviously was started. So go eat a moose fetus.
And no George, I wouldn’t say add racing to The Club. NiGHTS already had a side-platforming thing with the stupid kids, with this they’re just expanding upon it.

The fact that they say these platforming segments are “later on in the game” suggests that they could be just some kind of tacked on minigame or something. Until we know anything at all about this, I’m not going to worry in the slightest. I don’t care if there are some platforming levels, as long as the classic Nights gameplay is still intact, and that seems to be the case.

My sentiments exactly.
In any case, way I hear it, Sonic 06’s budget was ridiculously low; at around 5 million. Thats probably how Sega made money off this game even though it flopped. Thats lower then a lot of last gen game budgets, I have no doubt that such a budget would have spelled doom for a 360 title.
In any case, GameSpot seems to be rather happy about this game’s progress this late in it’s development cycle, and both they, 1up, and Advance Media (whom apparently actually had some hands on time) like what they’re seeing with this game. So I don’t think we have much to worry about as far as the development process goes

Aki-at; thats prob it, but I prob misread it, thanks for correcting me.
Well as for NiGHTS it still has positive news and thats MORE than I can say for Sonic 06 at last E3. But to be honest, Sega let press play it not watch it. I want to see what people bitch about.
The only crap I see is 13 year old Xbox Nerds going “OMG GRAPHKIS ARE CRAP” they looked like a PS2 game in screen shots, thats fine.
But The game looked so much better in motion and the Music is good too IMO.
Platforming stages, :: face palm:: it all depends how there put into the game, being tacked on (like playing with Knuckles, Tails, Eggman, Rogue, Knuckles on SA2 would piss me off) I don’t want it to be like Sonic Adventure 2 where you play the game and say “I like the Night parts but the kids parts where boring” Get what I’m saying?
I wish Sega would make the game level designs two parts, basically you fly as the Jester, when you run out of blue orbs you fall as a kid and the ground is on rails (camera behind you like crash) and its a plateform level that you try to avoid bad guys and theres secrets and stuff , The level goes in a circle and you finally end up in Temple ORB thing….
Later when you beat the game you can choose to go back to the dream world as the kids and find the secrets on the floor and do other things, but them forcing you to play as them is a no in my book.
Thats my View.

I don’t see how that’s relevant, but, ah, all right. I’ve been meaning to put more time in this week anyway–everyone has a week of LV3 photon fortune/holy light luck/whatever as one of the rewards for Firebreak.
