Happy 16th birthday Sonic!!

by Graham on June 23rd, 2007

Sonic 16th

Cue the fanfares, strike up the drum-roll, for today it is Sonic the Hedgehog’s sweet 16th birthday. What will the adolescent receive for his birthday this year? Well I don’t know, that would be up to his parents, (creators) Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima, to decide- let’s hope he gets that pony he has always wanted!

If you want to help celebrate Sonic’s 16th birthday, don’t forget to check out the action on Phantasy Star Universe, where you can receive your free Sonic statue to help commemorate this grand day.

We here, at Sega Nerds, are hoping to give you a whole weeks worth of Sonic content. Giving you articles focusing on all aspects of Sonics life over the last 16 years, and a glimpse of his future work. But first we shall have a brief overview, to help remind us all of what Sonic has achieved so far. I can tell you, at 16, I hadn’t done half of what this character had.

Over the past 16 years, our beloved blue Hedgehog has appeared in numerous console games, starting out on the Sega Megadrive (June 23rd, 1991) in Sonic the Hedgehog and is still going strong today, with his recent forays, on the latest consoles, the Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3, in (coincidentally named) Sonic the Hedgehog (aka Sonic ‘06), and more recently on the Nintendo Wii in Sonic and the Secret Rings.

As well as the huge library of games, Sonic starred in his own tv series, not just one series, but five, plus specials, all of them released for western audiences, with Jaleel White (Steve Urkel, in Family Matters) taking on the role of Sonic (well his voice). As well as the cartoon shows, Sonic has appeared in many comic books and even some novels. Sonic’s comic book series, are different across the world, with various comics produced in the USA, Britain and Japan.

After the fall of the Dreamcast, Sonic has appeared in several games, many of which are considered to be pretty poor, (Sonic Riders, Sonic ‘06…), and Sonic’s reputation has been battered around of late. But Sega are trying to get back on track, with recent hits such as Sonic Rush and Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Plus later this year Sega will release a monumental title in video game history, with their release of Mario and Sonic at the Olympics. For the first time, former rivals, become lovers as Nintendo and Sega team up to create a game using their ‘flagship’ characters. The game is due for a September (2007) release, on the Nintendo Wii and DS systems.

Also more recently (this week in fact) Sega announced another collaboration with RPG giants, BioWare. This collaboration revealed yet another groundbreaking moment in Sonic’s life, as BioWare plan to develop the first Sonic RPG, due for release in 2008 on the Nintendo DS.

Please stay tuned for more Sonic content coming your way over the next week, but for now enjoy this video featuring some of Sonic’s work.

    former rivals, become lovers

I hate you for the hentai you have just inspired. Seriously, WHY?!

I’ll repeat what I said earlier today: Sonic’s better off now than he has been at any point since the 32x launched. FACT.

I’d wish for him to be able to turn things around, but quite honestly he already has. Most people who trash Sonic 360 are judging by the Xplay review, SatSR is generally regarded as the best/second best (behind one of the Sonic Adventures) 3D Sonic ever, Rush was very well recieved (even by critics! Critics hate Sonic because they’re emo that every game can’t be S3&K!), and at least where I’m from Riders is obscure but liked. And as you said, his upcoming games all look awesome and they haven’t even announced the console one yet.

Have a super happy fun time birthday, Sonic!

Lmao, Kijuna you are the one who thought about hentai with that phrase, I honestly wasn’t thinking about anything like that at the time! lol.

-In all honesty I do agree with you somewhat. I really enjoy most of the recent Sonic games. I spoke on the Nerdcast of how much I enjoyed Heroes. I played some of Riders and enjoyed that too (though not the greatest racing game ever). And I have decided to pick up Sonic 06 and play it through properly - just see if it is really that bad (previously I had only played a couple of levels).

    Anyway, Happy Birthday (again) Sonic!

    P.S.

I think we should now hold a Sonic/Mario hentai contest, just for you Kijuna! :)

Aye after a train wreck that was known as Sonic 06, Sonic has bounced back quite easily, we’re already getting the sequel to one of the most loved Sonic games since Sonic Adventure (though not by the same developer mind) SEGA working in partnership with Nintendo and a RPG from one of the best developers in the Western world when it comes to RPG.

Defiantly SEGA have assessed the mess, analyzed it and started working extra hard into making Sonic the household name he was. Now if Nintendo could take note and stop Star Fox from imploding any further…actually a good idea would be to let SEGA handle the next Star Fox game, the guys behind Panzer Dragoon Zwei cannot fail!

Though mind you, we’ve yet to see a 3D Sonic platformer, even after 4 Sonic games have been announced, odd don’t you think?

Oh and Happy Brithday Sonic, it comes at a time when the sound of drums are beating and Henry leaves Arsenal, my I shall remember this day.

    P.S.

Regarding the whole hentai matter, Sonic is old enough to have sex now, so… *shot*

    Happy Birthday Sonic. …

Sonic has always had terrible times and great times. Just enjoy the good ones and use drugs to forget about the bad ones.

Sonic will always be a part of my life. I would have been 12 when the first sonic game came out and I remember the first time I saw the game in action, my jaw hit the floor, I immediately wanted a Sega Mega Drive! I was lucky enough to get one for my 13th birthday, and I have always said that the best era of gaming was during this period, the rivalry between Nintendo and Sega was much more fun than the aggressive Sony fanboys of today. I believe the glory times for sonic, was without a doubt 1991 to 1993, Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Sonic CD, are by far the best sonic games to have been developed, I will always remember these games with fond memories. Happy Birthday Sonic!!

Sonic’s parents are Hirokazu Yasuhara and Oshima, man. Naka is more like the mean nanny who drank and beat him.
