Today Sega announced Sonic Rivals 2, sequel to the 2006 PSP game developed by Backbone Entertainment.

The game will feature new playable characters, including series regular Tails. Six multiplayer modes will be offered, and only one game disc will be required for two people to play. Sonic Rivals 2 is scheduled for release this fall.

The gloves are off and Sonic and his rivals are gearing up for an intense new head-to-head competition exclusively on the PSP®.

This sequel to Sonic’s 2D action-platformer features all-new ‘jostling’ controls for tighter competition and a brand new Battle mode allows two players to jump into six different multiplayer challenges by sharing one disc.

With extra playable characters - including Miles ‘Tails’ Prower - 12 new stages and upgraded signature moves for each character, the enhanced Rivals experience brings a whole new level of handheld fun to the PSP.

• Battle Mode: Players select from six ways to thrash their rival buddies: Knockout, Ring Battle, Race, King of the Hill, Capture the Chao, and Tag.

• Single-Disc Game Sharing: Two players can easily access the multiplayer challenge with just a single disc using the Wi-Fi function.

• Intriguing New Storyline: The Chao seem to be disappearing and all eight rivals must work fast to find out who is behind it.

• New Playable Characters: Join Tails and two new characters for even more fast-paced action with your rivals.

• Free Play Mode: Free from rivalry, experience the challenging old-school Sonic-style map at your own pace.

• Expanded Card Collection: Collect 150 new cards for loads of new options to customize your playable characters.

“This sequel to Sonic’s 2D action-platformer features….”

2D?! I haven’t played the original - but I was always under the assumption the game was 3D…. it certainly looks 3D.

They’re refering to 2D gameplay. Considering it’s all 3D, it’s a bit obvious what it means. It’s nice to see they actually have Tails in it now, though it still looks boring and I’ll never bother with it until emulation happens. Maybe if we’re lucky Silver the Klansman hangs Shadow at the end to freshin’ things up a little!

Ok now hold up Kogen…

So is the game like playing the original Sonic games (on the Megadrive) - but it has 3D polygons?

-I recall seeing images that made it look like most 3D Sonic games….

I think that Sonic Rivals has a lot of potential! If it was a 3D game that played in the style of the original Sonics. However it is more like a racing game!!!

Grant is right, i sorta wish that Sega would stop being idotic, people want a full blown game, with racing on the side for Multiplayer, -.-’;

Oddly enough, apparently it was going to be a normal 2D styled Sonic game, but Takashi Iizuka apparently had a talk with one of the producers (or directors, can’t remember) and recommend them to make it a racing game instead or something along those lines, I remember reading it sometime ago on TheGHZ.

They’ve made games like that with their Death Jr. franchise and it turned out awful, apparently. So they probably shouldn’t do it.
