Sega Nerds

NiGHTS composer working on new Smash Bros.

by Graham on May 22nd, 2007

SmashBrawl

Nintendo recently opened the doors on the official site to the new Smash Bros game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, for the Nintendo Wii.

The highly successful fighting game, originally on the Nintendo 64, then GameCube, is one of the most anticipated upcoming Wii titles on Nintendos release schedule, and Nintendo are pulling out all the stops with the game. So much so that they have brought in some of the gaming worlds top composers, 36 composers to be precise!

Among these composers we see many ‘familiar’ (to be honest you probably haven’t heard the names- but should definitely know the work) Nintendo composers, such as Koji Kondo (Legend of Zelda series/Super Mario Bros Series) and Hajime Wakai (Pikmin series/Star Fox series).

But the most exciting of the names of the list for all us Sega Nerds should be the inclusion of Tomoko Sasaki. Don’t sit there and say “Who?” This man person (we are told he/she is a woman) has many top game credits to their name and most of them are Sega games;

Feel the Magic XY/XX (2004), SEGA Corporation
Sonic Adventure 2 (2001), SEGA of America, Inc.
Sega Rally 2 Championship (1999), SEGA Corporation
Space Channel 5 (1999), SEGA Corporation
NiGHTS into Dreams… (1996), SEGA Corporation
Toonstruck (1996), Virgin Interactive Entertainment, Inc.
Ristar (1995), SEGA of America, Inc.
Panic! (1993), Data East Corporation

Also making the list is another veteren composer of many a Sega title, Yuzo Koshiro;

Shenmue II (2001), SEGA Corporation
Beyond Oasis (1995), SEGA of America, Inc.
Streets of Rage 3 (1994), SEGA of America, Inc.
Streets of Rage 2 (1993), SEGA of America, Inc.
Batman Returns (1992), SEGA Enterprises Ltd.
Shinobi II: The Silent Fury (1992), SEGA Enterprises Ltd.
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), SEGA of America, Inc.
Streets of Rage (1991), SEGA of America, Inc.
The Revenge of Shinobi (1989), SEGA Enterprises Ltd.

While we shouldn’t read too much into this, there have been many a rumour in circulation, regarding whether Nintendos recent ties with Sega will stretch so far that a Sega character will be included within the game. Neither Sega nor Nintendo have said this will happen, but Smash Bros Brawl will include at least one non-Nintendo character, Konami’s Solid Snake (Metal Gear series). And with that the composer, Akihiro Honda (Metal Gear Solid 4/Metal Gear Portable Ops), shall also be working on the Nintendo brawler.

So could this mean that there is a chance of seeing a Sega character within the game? I wouldn’t like to say “Yes” or “No” right now. We should all note, none of the composers work directly for Sega, but take a look at the games the (above) composers have been involved with… Sonic, NiGHTS, Streets of Rage, Shenmue…. all could be possibilities.

Imagine putting the beat down on that smug-faced Pikachu with Ryo Hazuki (Shenmue) or even Axel Stone (Streets of Rage)? That would be more than reason enough to buy the game.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who wants to see Ryo Hazuki in SMBB.

I’d also love to see Ryo Hazuki in SSBB but i’d rather see him in a totally new game.

Me too. Unfortunately, Shenmue 3 doesn’t seem to be in Sega’s plans.

But hey if Sega needed a decent way to raise Ryo and Shenmues profile - it would be to include him in a game like this.
One problem with Shenmue (from what I could tell) is that it seemed to be only Dreamcast and Sega fans who know anything about it.
All my casual gamer friends (i.e PS2 owners) had never heard of it at all. Sega need to advertise more.

Hey I’m not saying it will happen or that Shenmue 3 is likely (at this point int time at least) But it would be a smart move I think.

    Lol - really?

I don’t believe you! Women can’t write music for games! No! (Yes I am joking)

Hmmm- well I shall change the post in light of this….

Hey man, it wasn’t that I didn’t believe you. I guess in my sexist way, I just assumed she was a he. (Also I’m not very good a judging foreign names to their sex)

Thanks for letting us know though! :)

Sorry, it’s a small chance that any Sega characters besides Sonic (or possibly NiGHTS) will appear in SSBB. However:

    1. The characters could appear as Assist Trophies (look at smashbros.com for info) to beat up players for you. Having Knuckles punch the crud out the your emenies would be one of most cooless thing in Sega and Nintendo history.

    2. Their own fighting game. That’s right, I’m thinking Sega Smash Bros. With a range of Sega characters ranging to Sonic to Alex Kidd would be the best thing since sliced bread.
