NiGHTS to offer two control schemes, new screens released

Although many gamers have said since the beginning NiGHTS would work perfectly with the Wii’s remote, there’s always that faction of gamers out there who don’t like change. That’s why Takashi Iizuka, the game’s main man, said he’ll be offering up two control schemes in an interview with NGamer: one that utilizes the Wii and a more traditional style:
“We’re currently designing the game to be played with two control configurations. Our main focus is to design the game to be played with the Wii remote but for those gamers that are more comfortable using a more “traditional-style” controller configuration, they will able to plug the nunchuk into the Wii remote as well.
Oh yeah, Sega has also released some new screens that I’m sure you will all gush over. If any of you were worried that the underpowered Wii wouldn’t be up for the task, don’t be, these screens are gorgeous.

I actually think those graphics look like something from the Dreamcast era.

Well there’s nothing wrong with that Nathan!
To be honest I’m not overally bothered by the graphics so much… sure it’s great if it looks decent. And I hope Sega ensure it looks its best.
But I think Nights is about the speed, music and wonderful colours of the world you are in. By todays standards the original title has pretty terrible graphics… yet the game still looks damn amazing, because of the way the game is laid out.
-But on a side note. I don’t remember NiGHTS (the character) looking quite so… ‘fruity’ before.

Of course, every old game looks terrible by today’s standards. The original NiGHTS was a masterful showcase of Sega Saturn’s raging processing power, according to the back of the box :)
The Wii screenshots might not be technically impressive, but it’s the best Sega art direction I’ve seen in a long time.

When I say it has bad graphics (these days), but still looks good. I mean it looks good even by todays games.
Obviously console from 2 or 3 generations ago will have poor graphics compared to todays systems. But even so, Nights still holds up (in my opinion) against modern games- because the colour palette in the game is so vivid and the art direction is still pretty unique.
Graphically a poor game these days… Visually (however) still a masterpiece.
(I hope that makes sense)

What are you guys talking about?
What have you seen, other than maybe Sonic is better looking than this on the Wii? Sure, it’s not going to be up there with the PS3 and 360. We know that, but it looks damn good for what system its designed for.

Chris,
Then maybe it shouldn’t have been designed for the Wii, and Sega fans should be dismayed by that?
I continue to hold that this would be much better on the PS3 or 360 (from a purely artistic, not economic standpoint) due to the fact they can render the gorgeous environments which form 80% of the appeal of Nights.

I actually disagree with SuitCase.
I think the Wii is the perfect system for it. I never said these screens looked bad by the way Chris. I was commenting on Resets post- saying that the graphics don’t need to be really well rendered- as long as Sega can give us the vivid colours and sounds, it will be an impressive game. I was using the old NiGHTs as an example- by saying that even though the graphics are totally inferior (as one would expect) these days- I would still say the game looks as good as a modern title, because it is unique and so wondefully made.
(I don’t think I can explain what I said in many more ways!)
I think the Wii is the best system for it- just because of the controls though. The Wiimote makes even crap games fun - and I think controlling Nights with the Wiimote will enhance the experience over the original title. If they were to make it for the 360 or PS3, the game will be the same as the original, just better graphics.

Takashi Iizuka himself said he originally wanted to make the game for 360/PS3 rather than the Wii. That in and of itself is evidence enough that this new control scheme probably isn’t the best of ideas - especially when they’re going to provide the more traditional option as an alternative.
I for one would prefer for this game to just be more of the same, with better graphics. So far it looks like it’s not going to be much of either.

Yes. It looks like Dreamcast. I’m not at all surprised. Apparently the game must have been in development for Dreamcast and when the plug was pulled on the system, it was shelved. Luckily, though GAMECUBE couldn’t manage the feat, the same code could be ported to Wii with relative ease. If I own a Wii an this game alone, I’ll be plenty satisfied. Though I’d still like to see versions of Panzer Dragoon Saga, DecAthlete and Jet Grind Radio appear on the system as well. Take care, happy gaming, enjoy life!
