Sega’s latest mystery game revealed?

by Graham on March 27th, 2007

FurFighters2??

No, not the madness that has been spreading, regarding the potential NiGHTs announcement, that Official Nintendo Magazine might be doing in April (May edition).

But rather this is to do with Sega’s latest stunt. The kidnapping video. We posted the strange publicity stunt just yesterday, and it could be already that we have worked out what the game might be!

Note, I say what it might be. It’s still all speculation right now- we have not heard anything from anyone on this topic. But just by taking a few clues ‘hidden’ within the videos, it is possible to hazard a guess at what the game might be.

Firstly the clues …

What clues? Yeah watch the video. Can you see anything? No probably not. I shall help you out here (not just being nice, but if I didn’t, this post would be short and pretty boring)

  • Number one - you have an English ‘member’ (could just be an actor) of the Sega staff being held hostage.
  • The overall theme of the video is quite Asian - the sheets, the style of art, in the backdrop and, of course, the Geisha girls.
  • Animals set a big part to the video. The hostage wearing what appears to be a bunny mask and the male torturer wearing a monkey mask.
  • The clues that really start to give it away are the Logo in the backdrop - A simple cartoon face.
  • The name of the broadcasting station: “SJS”
  • And of course, James Blunt … actually no. James Blunt isn’t a clue, (at least not what I can tell), it’s just God awful.

Ok, so I doubt any of you will have really worked this out at all. But major kudos to anyone that has!

Firstly, take the Asian theme to be Japanese - as Geishas are usually associated with Japan, rather than other Asian countries (like China). Now put them all together.

Take Japanese, English, the logo and the name “SJS.” Do you know what you get? No?

How about an English advertising/design agency that goes by the name “Small Japanese Soldiers?”

  • It’s a company based in England - hence the English member of Sega.
  • The name Small Japanese Soldiers fits the initials of the broadcasting station -SJS.
  • Again the name states ‘Japanese‘ - for the Asian theme.
  • And the logo? Check their website here. They have the same style cartoon logo all over the site.
  • And the animals? Well, if you search deep into their portfolio, you will notice one of the games they are credited for, is Fur Fighters! Follow this link, and then click on the comic strip frame that says “Vision” in it’s corner. Then, click “next” to locate the small advert (Sorry couldn’t link directly to the video- not our fault).

For those who don’t know, Fur Fighters was originally on the Sega Dreamcast and the Sony Playstation 2 and was published by Acclaim and developed Bizarre Creations.

Bizarre Creations has had and still maintains a fairly successful relationship with Sega, most famous among Sega fans for their work on Metropolis Street Racer for the Dreamcast, and currently The Club (360/PS3). So a Sega/Bizarre Creations partnership is certainly not out of the question.

Well now, could it be? A Fur Fighters sequel in the works?

I must emphasize again - this is all just hear-say right now. We have had absolutely no word on this from anybody at all.

It could all be crap, but you have to admit Small Japanese Soldiers definitely need some fingers pointed at them for the advert. I think the evidence against them is pretty solid. It’s the game that is still in doubt. But as I said above, the fact that the advert has an animal theme and one game SJS did some work for was Fur Fighters, so I don’t think I could be too far off the mark with my theory.

And perhaps this news isn’t that astounding. but I am pretty excited, Fur Fighters was a pretty solid shooter. It was a lot of fun when it was released (perhaps a tad dated now), but it will be pretty good to see if they are making a sequel … and also to see if I am right on my assumption.

If I am - you heard it here first folks!

Wow, that’s some pretty good detective work. Between you and Nathan, I think we could start our own private investigation team!

Also, it seems Totally Games likes to take articles without attributing the original source.

They jacked your article without even a mention. Makes you feel dirty, eh?

Well at least they didn’t quote us directly and not give us credit.

-But I wouldn’t want to say that they stole it from us- just in case. I mean, I managed to work it out- so I wouldn’t be suprised if others have done too.

If, however, they have worked it out themselves- then this surely helps to solidify my theory behind the game. Which is pretty good stuff. Or bith sites could just be barking up the wrong tree….

    Hey that’s pretty cool!

While I doubt there will be another Fur Fighters game, I do think you are right with most of those guesses.

There is no doubt that Small Japanese Soldiers is responsible for that advert (the logo is kind of a give away I guess). But what game could it be?

    Good work Nerds!
