NiGHTSintoDreams.com confirms NiGHTS sequel

It’s the rumor that won’t die: For the past few weeks, buzz about a NiGHTS sequel has been flying all over the internet. From the community reaction towards ONM’s upcoming revelation to Spong’s “confirmation” and everything in between, no further proof is necessary to show that people are eager for a new NiGHTS game. And a fansite has told Sega Nerds that yes, at least one is definitely coming.

I can hear your eyes rolling to the backs of your heads right now. I will openly admit that I too am a skeptic when it comes to matters like this. Stay with me.

I contacted the administrators of NiGHTSintoDreams.com, a fansite dedicated to NiGHTS (obviously), and asked them what the deal is. They claim to have contacts and sources both inside and near Sega, but due to the sensitive nature of the situation, they couldn’t reveal any specific names to me. However, they did have plenty of interesting things to say.

NiD.com has been around for 11 impressive years. In internet terms, that’s practically archaic. “We’d just like to clear up that our website has never once reported that a hoax was fact, we always discredit hoaxes as being so. And we’ve seen MANY,” said TRiPPY, one of two admins at the site.

When asked about all the rumors surrounding NiGHTS and the upcoming ONM feature, NiD.com had this to say: “Some have brushed it off as an April Fools joke and even if it turns out to be the case we’ve been informed of NiGHTS sequal [sic] news for a long time now. THERE IS a NiGHTS game in development as we speak.” And for which platform? Nintendo Wii.

I asked if the new NiGHTS game is a Virtual Console port of the original classic, or a new game altogether, or some crazy hybrid of old and new. NID.com said they were told that the new game is a brand-new sequel with new characters and new design, but some old levels may reappear. Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima are both not involved with the project, as has been confirmed previously.

NiD.com said that they first caught wind of a new NiGHTS game at last year’s E3, when Sega staff mentioned they’d heard something internally regarding the franchise. NiD.com also heard that the game could be released as early as this year - probably near the holiday season.

Not only that, but there have also been hints of more than one sequel: “We’ve also heard of another game in production that will be released a while after the Wii game for another console, but we dont know much about this one.”

That was about all they felt comfortable telling me at the time. Some of it was stuff we’ve heard before, but they were also able to provide a few details that have never been revealed as of yet. As to whether or not it’s all true, we’ll just have to wait and see. And pray.
