The Golden Compass

Sega of America and Sega Europe today revealed the first details about the videogame adaptation of The Golden Compass, an upcoming New Line Cinema movie based on the book by Philip Pullman. Shiny Entertainment, best known for developing videogames based on The Matrix movies, will develop The Golden Compass for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and PC. A2M will develop the the Nintendo DS version.

Players will assume the roles of a young girl named Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon (Pan). Lyra is out to rescue a friend kidnapped by a mysterious organization known as The Gobblers, and she will visit 13 different environments in her adventure, including some that you won’t see in the movie.

The Golden Compass is the first book in the very popular “His Dark Materials” trilogy, with the series of books having sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. The first film, set for theaters this December 7, 2007, stars Daniel Craig (James Bond in the recent Casino Royale) and Nicole Kidman, with Chris Weitz directing. The game is scheduled for release shortly before the movie hits theaters.

The game adaptation was originally announced in September of 2006.

So basically the DS version is the good one.

I don’t think this game is going to be very good… I mean Shiny are pretty good, but there isnt a very long development time on this game.
So I hope it works out, but I doubt it.

The game’s at least 8 months away. That’s a decent chunk of time, not to mention the deal was originally announced almost half a year ago.

Even so, the really good games take around 3 years to make unless the engine is already developed. But it wont be.

I hope its good.

WTF? ‘The Golden Compass’ ??!!!

Is that the US name for the book? Because over here (in the books native land) it’s called ‘Northern Lights’ -The trilogy is still called ‘Dark Materials’. A bit like how “Harry Potter and the Sorcerors Stone” - was originally called “Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone”

-It’s my brothers favourite set of books. I thought they were ok. The 3rd had such a crap ending though, it ruined the whole trilogy for me.

Anyway- I can’t quite see how they can really make a game on this. Or at least not make it any fun. The books are quite slow paced and full of detail, no action or anything. No doubt it will be a game with lots of spiders that you jump on randomly, collecting small items like apples- with the movie storyline tied in. (Thats what a lot of crap moviebasedgames seem to entail).
-If they somehow manage to recreate the amazing world that is featured in the books, and also get the feelings and aventure from the books into the game, it could be fun. But I still don’t see how they can get much ‘action’ into the game. But it could work really well as a point-and-click type of game…..

Graham, don’t you understand? Publishers will decide to make a game about anything if it means them making money. It doesn’t matter if it’s good or makes sense.
