PS3 Six-Axis “Rubbish”
It’s nothing big when you hear gamers grumbling about a consoles flaws, we just play the games what do we know? But it becomes big news when a games developer starts to complain about a systems features.
According to CVG a top developer at Sega has been quoted stating that the PS3’s Six-Axis tilt function is really nothing special and that it is no replacement for the good old rumble feature that the Dual Shock controllers of the PS1 and PS2 had.
“Tilt control’s not difficult to do,” says Guy Wilday, head of Sega Racing Studio, on the possibility of tilty-pad gameplay being included in their new version of Sega Rally for PS3. “Fundamentally, though, the whole tilt control thing is rubbish. It’s no compensation for rumble.”
It’s also been said, that even though Sony opted for the motion sensor feature to ‘enhance’ PS3 games, the Wii’s remote does it much better and also has the added features of rumble and additional sounds emmitting from the remote.
It’s certainly never good news for a company when the developers start to complain. A games company can happily ignore the abuse and yells from the gaming community, but when it comes from inside the industry, it’s got to hurt some.
What do you all think? Is the Six-Axis overrated? Or is the switch from rumble to tilt a good idea on Sony’s part?

11 opinions for PS3 Six-Axis “Rubbish”

Well, the SIXAXIS and the Wii-mote are completely different.
The SIXAXIS’ Tilt function isn’t the main focus of any of the games that use the feature. For instance, in Resistance you shake the controller to escape the grasp of a Chimera and on Genji you tilt to dodge. You can actually just turn the tilt function off if you like. Nintendo’s approach is totally different, they intend whole games to be based on the control set.
I seriously didn’t know the PS3 didn’t have rumble up untill about a day before mine came in the mail, I wouldn’t have noticed it if I hadn’t read about it either. I’d say the tilt function is sort of neat and could lead to some interesting things if it’s used properly. So, I’d pick the tilt function over the useless rumble ‘feature’.
The only good thing rumble was ever used for was on Skies of Arcadia. Plus, the newer systems have some sissy rumble, you had to fight with the Dreamcast Controller to keep the thing in your hands when it would rumble.

I think tilt controls for a racing game like Sega Rally (or any other game that requires control accuracy) is not good, since you can’t get the same tight controls with it as you would with an analog. But rumble is more of an extra that’s really not neccessary to play a game, and while it can be implemented in a way that it plays a part in gameplay, it rarely and it doesn’t go past rumbling when you get close to an enemy or hidden item. It’s almost useless.
That said, I really do like the way rumble is implemented in racing games like Gran Turismo. You can feel the reaction of the tires.
Now if Sega were to release an Arcade style force feedback steering wheel, that would be another story!

Well seeing as I have never played a PS3- I don’t really know how good the tilt feature is. But from the sound of it, it doesn’t sound that great.
I can sort of see how it could be good for games involving hovering spaceships, helicopters or Harrier Jets - using the controller and tilting it when the craft is stationary in the air for accuracy in landing and dodging. But other than that I think it sounds tacked on and just a sad replacement for an analogue stick.
-You could say that about the Wiimote (being a sad replacemet) But I really don’t think it is. It can and has been used to great effect in the games on the system. An example being Red Steel- yeah it got mixed reviews- some slating it. But to be honest its one of the most fun games I have played in years- but only because of the remote. If the game had been on the 360, even with updated graphics, the game would have been mediocre. The Wiimote adds so much accuracy over shots- by the end of the game, when I had become and ‘expert’ I was able to get head shots on the vast majority of enemies from a distance- something I find harder to do with a normal controller.
Also I love rumble. Sure technically its pintless- but I think it definitely adds to gameplay. Another example would be Far Cry on the Wii. This game has no rumble feature. And I noticed it straight away- as soon as I died. The rumble helps show when you are getting hit, sure the game has little flashing red points to show you are getting hit- but I wasn’t sure how badly at the time and I was concentrating on hitting enemies. In a game its great to feel the shots as they hit you. Or the rumble of a car as its changes surface or feel yourself skidding off a track. Also in both Red Steel and Zelda on the Wii, everytime your sword hits another sword or object hard, you can really feel the remote shaking in your hand - as though the vibrations of the sword blade are really there. Sure it’s not necesary, but its a nice feature and feels good.
I think that rumble helps add that little extra realism to a game, where the tilt function can’t.
Alls said and done- I wish Sony had gone with the Boomerang controller idea. And I’m not kidding - I thought that looked great and more comfortable than the Dual Shock style they are using now.
But I guess it’s all personal preference. But Sony could have doe omething similar to that of the N64 or Dreamcast- and had a rumble pack you slot in- people find them a pain, but at least it gives the option for rumble if you want it.
p.s- Cheers Blacker Omegalon ;)
