Review: Toe Jam & Earl (Wii Virtual Console)

I was never fortunate enough to play Toe Jam & Earl on the Sega Megadrive when it was first released, but I did get to play the wonderful sequel - TJ & Earl: Panic on Funkotron, a game that I loved dearly. So I was very excited when Sega released the original TJ & Earl game on the Wii’s Virtual Console.
The immediate imrpession I got was “What the hell?” The game isn’t anything like I was expecting. The sequel is more of a typical platformer (though so funny and unusual it was better than the norm) yet the original is a top down- (almost) isometric view in a similar way to Jurassic Park on the Snes.
For those that don’t know the general gist of the game is that Toe Jam and Earl are two music loving aliens and they are out and about in space, when their ship crash lands on Earth. It is now up to them to go about the planet finding the missing peices of ship and avoiding/ killing these humans.
Sounds kind of lame huh? Well I’m not going to lie. It is.
Review Roundup: Full Auto 2
Posted by Chris. Filed under News. Tagged with Full Auto 2, Review Roundup.

While games like Interstate ‘76 and Twisted Metal have made the vehicular-combat genre pretty popular the last few generations, Sega hopes its newest foray will keep that popularity going.
Full Auto 2, which was released on the PS3 Dec. 7, features 25 vehicles and new weapons and other items for more creative ways of blowing your enemies to smithereens. But does this sequel do enough things different and better than the original to justify your purchase? Let’s find out.
- GameSpy (80/100) - A significant improvement over its predecessor on the 360.
- Play Magazine (70/100) - As a slightly improved sequel to this year’s car-carnage racer on Xbox 360, the Playstation 3-exclusive Full Auto 2: Battlelines looks better, plays better, feels better….just enough to please current fans of the series, yet further bore the haters.
- G4 TV (40/100) - Cars skid for no reason. Frames slow down just as the action heats up. Full Auto 2: Battlelines spins its wheels keeping the same controls and not improving the over all experience.
Currently, Full Auto 2 has a 71 metacritic score, which is barely above its Xbox 360 predecessor which enjoys an equally mediocre 70 metacritic rating. And while it doesn’t seem like Full Auto 2 does a whole lot better than the original, the game may benefit from a lack of decent competition.
G-Spot: No Wii Virtua Tennis a mistake?
Posted by Graham. Filed under Nintendo Wii. Tagged with Exclusive, G-Spot.
Sega has always been well known for its brilliant sports titles on all systems, and they found huge success and world-wide acclaim in the form of Virtua Tennis in the Arcades and on the Dreamcast.
So it isn’t surprising that so many people, including myself, have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Virtua Tennis 3.
Since Virtua Tennis 3 was first revealed to be in development, the game was originally said to be for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. But more recently, Sega has revealed that the game will also be appearing on the PSP. All good things I say.
The 360 and PS3 players get to see some high-definition Tim Henman volleys (Hey, I’m British - I’m always going to be backing the home team!). Whilst the more outdoor going gamers get to play some fantastic tennis on the go, anywhere without the need for carrying anything bigger than a pencil case - with the PSP version.
It is here though that one must beg the question: “Why not the Wii?”
New Virtua Tennis 3 Trailer

GameTrailers has a new trailer for Virtua Tennis 3 right here. While it doesn’t look extremely impressive for a next-gen title, you can’t go wrong with Virtua Tennis, a game many consider to be the most fun tennis video game of all time.
Virtua Tennis 3 is currently planned for release on Sega’s Lindbergh arcade system, Sony PlayStation3 and PlayStation Portable, Microsoft Xbox 360, and PC.
The Dark Side of Gaming: How Nintendo has tricked us all with the Virtual Console
Posted by Chris. Filed under Nintendo Wii, Virtual Console.
Many gamers like to think of Nintendo as a shining light in the video game industry, fighting off the evil empire that is Sony and Microsoft.
The reality, however, is Nintendo is in the “game” for the money and not for you as a gamer. They will do everything in their power to take every dollar bill from your wallet and stash it away in their dungeon.
This is evident by their pricing structure for the Wii’s Virtual Console games, and how they have pulled the wool over all our eyes.
Sorry for the downtime

I apologize for Sega Nerds being down for a good portion yesterday. Our host had to install a new hard drive on our server, and it took a little longer than I hoped.
But we’re now back in business and ready to bring you the Sega goodness.
Sega Nerds FTW!
PSU Update #4
Posted by Nathan. Filed under Microsoft Xbox 360, Nathan, News, PC, Sony PlayStation 2. Tagged with Phantasy Star Universe.
Phantasy Star Universe was updated right on schedule this Thursday night/Friday morning. This update was the fourth the game has received so far, and while no brand-new missions were added, three old ones received the S-Rank difficulty treatment. These missions are Plains Overlord (De Ragan), Sleeping Warriors (Relics), and Lab Recovery, all of which are accessible on the planet of Parum.
The second of the “story missions” has been added as well, called “Desert’s End.” This mission is Episode 2 Chapter 2 of Story Mode, and is accessible from the mission counter on the 5th floor of the Guardian’s Colony. The first online story mission (The Mask) must be cleared before this new one is able to be selected.
The Port Report: Alien Syndrome (NES)

Not every Sega Arcade game is available at home yet, so some times us Sega buffs have to find the best version available if we don’t want to turn to Emulation. Thus, the Port Report was born. Seganerds.com will brave the endless sea of Sega ports so you don’t have to! Keep in mind that the final score is not an overall game score, it’s a score comparing the game to it’s Arcade original.
The first ever Port Report is of the System-16 classic shooter, Alien Syndrome. Ported by Tengen, for none other then the Nintendo Entertainment System. Game fans that think Sega games first came to a Nintendo console with the Gameboy Advance or Gamecube will be surprised to know that it happened about twenty years earlier.
Toe Jam & Earl available on the VC on Christmas
Posted by Chris. Filed under News, Nintendo Wii, Video, Virtual Console.
Bah Humbug! The rumors of Nintendo giving us free VC games on Christmas seem to be more fake than Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Sega just sent us word the Genesis’ Toe Jam & Earl will be available for purchase on the Nintendo Wii’s Virtual Console on Christmas for 800 Wii Points.
And Sega has kindly sent us a video of Toe Jam & Earl in action on the Virtual Console. Aside from Gunstar Heroes, this will be the only other Sega VC title that interests me enough to buy.
So if you happen to receive any Wii Point cards for Christmas, you know where to spend them!
First post with the Wii browser

We already know the Wii’s web browser works well with Youtube.com and at wiicade.com. But will it allow us to bring you Sega goodness from the comfort of our couches?
Well, it looks like the short answer is yes, but I don’t think it will be taking the place of our beloved PCs anytime soon.
It doesn’t look like we’ll be able to quickly add any images to our posts, so don’t expect very many more posts from the Wii. Still, it is a cool novelty.
